Mali help please...sick.?.

nikon Dec 23, 2004 10:27 AM

I have noticed the last few days that my mali has been pretty inactive and aways has his head down. I have not seen him eat much if anything over the last few days. Holding him he has his eyes closed and his head "falls" like he's nodding off then he just leaves it against the srface of whatever he's on. I found a piece of millet in the corner of his mouth - didn't look too comfortable to leave there and all i had to do was brush it off. There was also a bit of sand on the front of his mouth that I just washed off with a q-tip. (You can see that in the picture). What shoudl I do? What should I look for?
Last weight was on Nov 29th and he was .7 grams (he's just a youngin) and today is was .58 grams. He doesn't look unhealthy, still plump and good color and everything.

I have only had him for about 4-6 months so could he just be burmating? The other two (Saharan and Ornate) are both still very active. All are CB.

If he was an adult, I wouldn't worry about it too much, but since he's so tiny, I would get him to a vet. He doesn't have much weight to lose - is that really all he weighs?? I thought new babies were in the 5-10g range. (But what do I know?)

My opinion is that this animal will not survive the night.

If you are willing to fight against the odds – the best solution possible would be an immediate vet visit. Not tonight, not tomorrow- immediately.

Unfortunately, looking at the photo, I believe the odds are still against this little guy surviving.

Just my personal opinion based on the photo and your comments.

i made a mistake. that weight was in oz... He has been very active up until the last couple of days. Just kinda happened.

i picked him up and he started to seizure....going to the vet now....

he's been in good shape since I got him. active and eater and healthy and everything and now he just stopped eating and is not doing very well. Vet mentioned cochcudia (sp?)...I am going to be leaving him at the shop for the next week cause I am going away...

Good Idea on the vet visit.
I'm wondering what that is that I see in your second pic. It looks somewhat large for a substrate for such a small uro. It's belly looks full. Has it passed any fecal matter in the last couple of days? I would take a small amount of whatever that substrate might be to the vet with you. It's just a guess on my part but it could be impaction possibly caused by the substrate. If impacted, you might be able to feel the belly area. Often you can feel hard lumps of food, or even larger pieces of gravel etc. At six months old and that small size, it should probably still be on paper ... and by it's self ... at least till you know what's up with it.
Good luck,
John

It's washed and sterilized playsand and millet seed. He's been eating the millet and hasn't had a problem. First thing that I did was check the belly. no lumps at all and he poops just fine. My petshop guy is a breeder. He has taken Godzilla for the next week since I am going away and going to try to get him healthy for me. He is going to try to treat what he thinks it is (I actually trust him a lot more than the vet around here) and he is going to get the fecies tested.
I don't have my hopes up but my fingers are crossed for him. I contemplated keeping him off the millet and sand until he got a little bigger but he wanted in and has been on it for some time now.

I never knew uros could have seizures. I lost it when he started to have one in my hands.....felt so helpless....still do...I keep wondering if it is something that I have done wrong.?. Not impacted as far as I can tell and gets along VERY well with the others..and they know that something isn't right. My ornate has been searching the cage for Godzilla since I got back and looking at me as if wondering where he is. I feel sooooo badly...now my holiday away is going to be spent wondering if he's gonna be ok and waiting for a phone call from my guy.....
