Tap Water?

AggieCS_31 Jul 03, 2003 09:57 AM

I am currently using city tap water for my Ball Python's water dish. I haven't thought of it to be dangerous but i was reading one website which said it could be dangerous. Could anyone help me out? I don't mind buying distilled water or anything but tap is just more convienient. Thanks in advance.

I have two ball pythons and I personally use filter water for them. Better safe than sorry.

I use tap water, always have. The water quality if very good where I live. If it's safe enough for you to drink, it'll probably be ok for your snakes.

Tap water ranges in pH from 4 (los angeles) to 9 (Austin, TX) or 10, depending on just how hard your water is. I'm not sure if a pH of 4 or 10 would be safe. I'm not sure of the buffer capability of reptile blood, but as long as the water isn't really hard or really acidic, it should be fine. It never hurts to find out what the pH of your tap is. Just my thoughts. -Whit

My goldfish lives in unfiltered tap water (dechlorinated, yes), so it works ok for everyone else in the house too. I understand that some people have really sucky tap water.

I bought a tap water filter. $30.00 at the local store, and safer for me, the kids and the snake.

I'm not sure whether tap water is bad or not, but over the last few years since my collection has grown I've felt more comfortable with filtered water. I went to Wal-Mart and got a PUR water filter that attaches right to my faucet. Now when I do waters it still takes the same amount of time. It just makes me feel better using filtered water.
