Is there a way to tell the gender of a snake without probing it? And how?

How I sex snakes is by actually tail shape. Females are flat on their underbelly near the end of their tail and slope uninterrupted into the end of their tail, males have a bulge on the underside and have stubbier tails. Of course I'm just an amteur, but that's how I heard several people sex their snakles without a probe. I sexed my own ball python correctly using the technique. However a probe is always the most sure fire way.

There are two ways to ACCURATELY determine the sex of your ball python: Probing and popping. That's it. Furthermore, in my opinion, anyone who says that they can ACCURATELY determine the sex of a ball python without using either of those two methods, I would be weary of.

Well how do i do the popping method?

The popping method will only work on hatchlings. Its hard to explain how to do it, you really need someone that knows how show you. Pressure is applied to the vent area and if done correctly the undeveloped muscles in the males hemipenis will allow them to be inverted and visable. The hatchling can be harmed if too much pressure is applied and males can be misidentified if done incorrectly. Probing is by far the best method! Hope I spelled hemipenis correct?

With sexually mature males, you could also tell that's what you have when you get sperm plugs when popped. Although this is not always the best way to tell that you have a male. It's one way to reassure that you do have a male.

It's fairly easy to sex corn snakes by their tail shape, it's almost impossible to sex ball pythons by their tail shape. A probe used CORRECTLY is your best bet.
