reattaching heat pads

britbiker Dec 23, 2004 02:56 PM

I have a heat pad attached to the bottom of an aquarium that I want to remove and use in another cage. The manufacturer says it cannot guarantee safety or performance if it is remove and reapplied. Is this just a legal dodge (avoid any and all liability), or does the pad really not work as well (or safely) if reapplied? Any opinions?

well depending on the heat pad it is, most likely it will ruin it. you would need a heavy duty adhesive solvent, and a scraper... then figure out a new type of glue to adhere it back that wont be affected by the heat. i wouldnt do it.

Are you talking about a zoo med heat pad? I personally would not remove it..

I have "re-used" a few heat pads. Gently and very, very slowly peel the pad off the tank. Once removed inspect it very carefully. If all is intact plug it in and see if it is working. If so, cover the sticky area on the pad with a like size piece of aluminum foil. Attach to the new cage with aluminum foil tape along the pad's edges.

I now attach all my heat pads with the foil tape and just leave the adhesive backing on the pad. This way it is very easy to re-position the pad or move it to another cage. Bill
