bleaching tank and accesories

uromagnus Dec 23, 2004 03:45 PM

Before my new Uro arrives Audrey told me I need to clean the tank and accesories because it may make the new Uro sick. I plan on doing this after the holidays.

some questions:

-she said to use 1/2 gal of bleach and fill the yank (40 gal breeder) with water for 24hrs. has anyone done this? wondering what kinda smell I may be in for since I am planning to do it in a bathroom and I have asthma(too cold for the garage).

-also have to bleach all non organic accesories overnight. the drift wood (that I love!) and the hide is recommened to dispose of as there is no guarantee the bleech with kill whatever may be on/in it.

-she mentioned something that a Uro/lizard may carry (a disease?) that could have contaminated these items. does anyone know exacty what that is? i wish i had written it all down.

any ideas?

My herp vet instructed me to clean my malis cage with a bleach and water mix, but though I can't remember the exact ratio, it was VERY diluted. A half gallon of bleach has got me thinking that you should consider a bit of research on this. Also, the solution was to wipe everything down, not soak it. Heck, many terrariums won't hold water =:^P

I agree with Jim...that much is too strong. When I used it I used 1 cup of bleach to 10 cups water and wiped everything down. I also put all my pre-washed stuff in the dishwasher alone and then use virosan when I take it out. I have gone to using virosan (nolvasan) which I buy from Proexotics. I spray this on everything and it is my favorite product, I can even use it with frogs. Good luck with your new uro.

ok... I will ck again with Audrey before I do anything to make sure I understand her instructions since all I did at the time was scribble down some notes on cleaning.

since Magnus was sick and WC I know the enclosure and furnishings need to be cleaned properly so as to not infect the CB baby.

do you clean new driftwood with Virosan? it does look like an interesting product on the websire. I do admit to only rinsing off with water the driftwood that I bought for Magnus after it was sitting in a pet shop for who knows how long.

I guess it does make sense that I need to dispose of that driftwood before I set up for the new little guy.

sorry for all the questions... I can not seem to find much info (if any at all) on cleaning/disinfecting enclosure furnishings.

You might look at www.beautifuldragons.com. In addition to her nice nutrition section, Veronica also has a section on cleaning products, what they do, and how to use them. I don't recall offhand if she talks about wood products there, but it's a good source for general cleaning info.
