White Lipped pythons are considered to be a medium sized python (roughly 5-8 feet), and have a great reputation of being aggressive and somewhat difficult to handle (mine is really quite docile and easy to handle) They have some higher heat & humidity requirements and are said to get RI frequently- I had some issues until I corrected the heat & humidity- now he is thriving. I hope this helps you, and you will probably get some of the other WLP owners to give you some more information. I also have Stimson's pythons, WLP is more complicated to take care of, but is well worth the effort!
Happy Holidays!
Thanks much Whitelips and happy holidays to you.
Thanks, I hope you have a GREAT Holiday too!
I have an adult pair of black phase white lipped pythons. I raised these from from wild caught babies and they are now about 6-7 feet long.
They are both fast moving snakes and not fond of being handled. They are nervous and kind of whippy despite regular handling. The male has never tried to bite, once out of the cage, but the female seems to have only one point in life which is to try and bite me. Her heat sensors are very accurate, her strike is lightnng fast and she is able to hit a small patch of exposed skin even though I cover up as well as I can when handling these guys. This includes gloves that cover me to above my elbows! These animals are absolutely beautiful, intelligent and interesting but I have never been able to get them to what I would consider the "nice pet" stage. It is funny that you mentioned that you have some spotted pythons. I got my white lipped pythons first and just recently got a pair of spotteds because I wanted some snakes that would be more suitable for handling. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence!
At least on my side of the fence! Thanks for the advice.
I have a gold phase male. I got him as a wild caught 3-4 footer, now around 6 feet. He's very nippy and fleighty inside his cage, but is very calm and handleable after you get him out of his cage. I think they seem like they are very, very intelligent and very aware of their surroundings. After you get your husbandry practices down they are really great and rewarding to work with. I keep mine at a little higher basking temp as most other pythons, at 92-94*F, and an ambient temp of around 84*F, I have never had any health problems, has always been a great eater. I keep humidity up at around 70%, and a good secure hidebox which he enjoys alot. Happy Holidays.
