Who would've thought I'd like looking at furniture......

nei Dec 23, 2004 05:34 PM

Yep... now I look at old cupboards, dressers, closets, a whole new way (how/if it would work as a herp viv/cage, of course!!!)
I'm not exactly sure if thats what I want to do for my new cage... buuut, its an idea anyway.
so, my question is: Are there any types of wood that would be BAD to use as a viv (high heat & humidity for me)??
What would I need to coat it with (and would I put that over or under *safe paint)??
Thanks!

any type of wood would be okay, though i'd avoid cedar, and pine if you can, b/c of the volitile oils that can cause herps problems w/ breathing, etc. however, if you cover all the cage with polyurethane, as is usually done, that shouldn't be an issue. just the same, hardwood looks better and would be safer.

Old furniture can make a great snake cage. I would not worry about pine at all but would avoid cedar.

Definately seal the interior with something. What you use really depends on the species and whether you want a clear coat or solid color.
