Brooksi in her spacious Boaphile cage

Nokturnel Tom Dec 23, 2004 07:53 PM

I keep a few of my breeder females in the 3 foot Boaphile cages. Most of my snakes are in Rubbermaids but I am going to be buying more of these cages for other females because it's my opinion the stress level of the females in breeding season is greatly reduced by access to all the extra room. Nest searching behavior and aggressive courting from the males was not as intense as previous years. Plus when you have a large nest box, hide box and water bowl in a smaller cage it can be quite cramped. This cage also allows the male to enjoy some extra room during breeding season as many of my snakes double clutch and that means having him in the females cage quite often. This shot is through the glass but it came out decent. She is roughly 4 foot long and eats about 1000 mice a year LOL enjoy Tom Stevens

What size Rubbermaids did you use for a snake that size?? I'm thinking of using them to cool 2 Eastern adults down, in a cooler room, rather than trying to move the divided 55 gallon tank I have them in now...

I bought a bunch of 27 quart, 32 quart and only had to use a single 59 quart for a 6 year adult Pine. I like to give my snakes room but during brumation it is not really neccesary. I have many well over 3 foot and even a few four foot or larger in the 27 quart ones. They settle down and just chill out. If the room you will keep them is already quite cool they should settle down quickly. I do not give them any water for a few days because I use aspen and they usually turn it inside out before they pick a spot to curl up at. I just return them to their larger cages in spring have it set up with a hide or two an they show no ill effects from being kept in the smaller cages during winter. Tom Stevens

Well, quite cool is relative. It was in the low 60s in that room last week after I closed off the heater vent, and I was hoping to reach the 50s by opening a small window. But we've had a hot spell and it is back to about 72 in there now.

I need to let them void about ten more days anyway, and hopefully it will cool off again. Otherwise I need to consider a fridge!

Thanks for the Rubbermaid size info,I'll need to check HomeDepot.
