Night-time or day-time feeding: Which is better?

tethered Dec 23, 2004 08:45 PM

Hello,

I have 3 Goniurosaurus luii, as some of you may already know. I've been feeding them right before I turn the lights out for the night, and they seem to be doing okay. The logic is that since they're nocturnal, the crickets won't bother them during daylight hours when they're trying to rest. I'm a relative newbie and in all of my research I haven't seen anything related to the timing of feeding. Is my logic correct, or should I feed during the day?

In the wild, they normally would begin hunting during twilight hours, so typically in captivity most people feed in the evening. It sounds like you are leaving crickets in the cage to roam around until they are eaten, is that true? It's not recommended, because as you say they will bother the gex.

I put the crickets in before the lights go out, and then in the morning I check to see if any crickets are left. Usually they've all been eaten, but if there is one or two left I take them out. Is this alright?

That's what I do with my nocturnal fat tail, but he's a pig and he rarely leaves any for me to fetch in the morning. He also sheds all in one day, so if he looks like he's about to shed (all grayish) then I don't put any crickets in until the next day so that they don't bother him while he sheds, since he won't eat them anyway.
