How soon can you sex?

aliceinwl Dec 23, 2004 11:21 PM

I'm think that my baby chuck may be a girl rather than a boy. The baby is almost as big as Gracie now. The pores are slightly bigger than those on Gracie (her's are almost invisible), but not by much.

I got the baby in early November and "he" was about 6" from head to tail and 14 grams. I haven't measured him lately, but he weighted in at 30 grams last weekend.

I really want to pick out a name, but I need to know the sex first

Alice, They should be sexable easily by now. I like to use a jeweler's loupe. You should be able to see the pores open with a little plug in the center if it is a male. In females the scales that make up the circumference of the pore will be really underdeveloped to almost nonexistant in the females and they will be closed really tight. Maybe you can post a pic. I'll try to get a picture this weekend, but from what you're saying I'm pretty sure it's a girl. The baby's getting close to Gracie's size. I've caught (and released) males of Gracie's size before and they had really obvious pores.

Gracie's pores are almost non-existant, when I got the baby it was about 6" from nose to tail tip and I could make out little pores so I thought that it had a good chance of being male. The pores, however, haven't developed at all as it's grown. I really wanted it to be a male, so I was hoping that maybe pore development was more dependent on age than size.

Oh well, it looks like I've got two pretty girls. Now I've got to come up with a girl name since Chuck won't cut it

Here's a shot of the pores. Although more developed than Gracie's, I'm not seeing anything indicative of a male at this point, maybe you guys can give me some confirmation

The time that the pores pop can really vary and those scales seem pretty developed. I would wait until he gets more size to him. I would say that could be a male. What is his svl? And try to post a good shot of him from the top. Tom

The SVL is just under 3.5 inches. Here's a pic of "him" under natural light.

Here's a pic I took this evening with the flash. He's just finishing up a shed. (I took the first pic this morning).
