Question about antibiotics(Amakicin)

Savvgawd Dec 24, 2004 02:00 AM

If anyone is familiar with this antibiotic, are there side effects? I ask because my yearling burm came down with a rare bacteria which led to a bad R.I., he ate all thoughout this, but now that I have begun on the Amakicin he will not eat and shows no interest to eat. Any help is appreciated.

Amikacin as a good, effective drug for treating severe infection that may be resistant to other antibiotics. It is an aminoglycoside and, as such, may be nephrotoxic especially in severely dehydrated snakes.

I rather doubt that the drug is the reason for refusal to feed. Remember that many snakes go off feed this time of year anyway. Keep him hydrated and monitor weight loss carefully. If he loses more than about 10% of his body weight you may want to consider tube feeding until he begins to feed again. If you need information on what and how to tube feed, post in here again.
