What type of Snake should I get...

xxjennyxx Jul 03, 2003 11:08 AM

I'm planning on getting a snake, i have a 2 year old (she loves snakes, every time we go to an exibit she has a great time with them) but i need to know what type of snake would be best, basically which ones would be comfertable around my daughter (she is very gentle with all animals)and one that she could help take care of (basic things like cleaning the tank and such)and btw i am not getting the snake for her i am getting it for me and her (mostly me)...

any help you have would be great

Corn snakes are very docile and a good choice. However, I'd be a bit cautious letting a 2 year old handle things like cage cleaning. Reptiles can carry and transmit salmonella bacteria, and most two year olds do not understand hygiene issues, and put their hands in their mouths often. I know mine does.
You might want to confine her cage-cleaning help to replacing a water bowl after you have cleaned and sterilized it, or putting down new papers or substrate in a cleaned and sterilized cage.

I would say either a corn snake or a ball python. You can find caresheets on both really easily by just doing a google search.

Though you may want to get an older snake. My yong corn is kinda nervous and rattles and strikes at me often. My three year old corn has struck at me only once and it was beacuse I was having trouble getting a hold of mice and he was hungry.
