What type of lighting should I be using these days?

photojoe Dec 24, 2004 12:42 PM

I'm looking to get effecient and not outrageously priced bulbs to create a very healthy pet. It is my understanding that the incandescent bulbs dont' really produce UV light (even though they say they do)

Is the repti sun 5.0 still considered one of the best. On a 40 gallon breeder should I have maybe 2 36" reptisuns (and then just my normal incandescents to heat)?

Thanks

Yep, the Reptisun 5.0 and Reptiglow 8.0 are both still great bulbs. If you want to go a little more expensive, the MVB's (mercury vapor bulbs) will kick the butt of any of the flourescents out there. If you go that way I'd get the ones that are separate from the ballast, more expensive at first but will save you money in the long run.

Also, don't wate your money on the "reptile" basking bulbs, they're the same as the spotlights/floodlights that you can get out at walmart just repackaged and 2-3 times the price.
