Post for Mike and a couple of questions...

Schizmsgrl Dec 24, 2004 12:49 PM

Sorry guys but I moved this post from down bottom because I was thinking that it might be overlooked....

Mike, the only color change I have really seen on her was a on her cheeks, and on a small spot on the top of her head, those spots turned a blueish green color. The first time was when I had been holding her in my hand and petting her for quite some time, and the second time was shortly after her first bath when she was still wrapped up in her towel...
But nothing like yours in your pic!!

I wonder why? Is she just too young or something?

Oh yeah and while I am thinking it I want to ask you a question... Gypsy will not drink out of her water bowl!! I have gotten her to do it only a couple of times scince I have had her. And we have had her scince October...The only time she will drink is if I dip my finger in her water bowl and hold it above her head, and then she drinks the drops off.

I know that sometimes she is very thirsty because the past couple weeks, just about every other morning, when I put my hand in her tank to take out her water bowl, she will come running right over to my fingers or hand and kinda start pecking away at me(not biting, just putting her mouth on me like she does to get the water off my fingertips.)
So I know she is thirsty, after I rinse and refill her dish I dip my finger in it and she drinks off it..

No matter how many times I show her the water dish she will RARELY use it! I dont know what to do...I tried the ice cube trick a few times, by putting it on top ofher screen above her water dish and letting it drip down in. I have got her to drink off the kitchen faucet twice also, but she dont seem to want that either...I have tried giving her cool water, and room temperature....What am I to do about my pickey drinker??! I am worried she will dehydrate!

I have town water which is chlorinated, so I even tried giving her bottled water with no go! And speaking of chlorination, is my tap water bad for her?

Sorry for all the questions!!

And once again, thanksfor taking the time to read!

Well, your agama is young. That's why I was asking actually. I was wondering myself at what age they would start to change color. Also, get ready for this - it may or may not be a girl. You'll just have to wait and see until it matures. I had mine backwards thinking the male was female and vice versa. The females change color too but not as vivid. When I bring my female outside in the humidity, she will change to a red head and a blueish-green body pretty quick. So, I believe it is a humidity thing. That may be why she does it after a bath.

As for the water drinking, lol, I've got a frilled dragon drinking out of a gerbil water bottle. I spoiled him as a baby and now I'm stuck with it! Sounds like the same thing happened to you. They will drink if they get thirsty enough and a water bowl is there. Just try to slowly ween her off the finger tips.

Hope this helps. I'll be gone until after Christmas but I'll check in again. Merry Christmas!

Mike

Thanks for responding to my message Mike! Greatly Appreciated!
Yea I know that there may be a chance that she is a male, but i certainy hope she is female, she is jus such a sweetie I cant picture her being a boy...exspecially scince we all call her "Gypsy Girl", dont wanna give her a complex....LOL

And yes she is quite spoiled rotten!! I had also thought about having to get her one of those Gerbil water bottles, but I hope to advoid that.
However, I did have a slight breakthrough the other day. I was doing my usual ritual of cleaning her water bowl and she came running over to lick at my fingers, so I dipped my finger in the water and let her lick it off, then I put my finger in her water bowl and started splashing it around (like I have done before many times with no success in getting her to drink out of it.) but this time she came over to the water bowl and was looking at my finger ...so I moved my finger closer to her with it still submerged, and she actually started to drink out of her bowl right next to my finger!! YEAH!!

I will keep you updated on her progress, and I will letcha know as soon as I see a big color change in her, I am really looking forward to it myself.

Do your Agamas eat any type of veggi's? I havent tried to give her any greens yet, but I think I may try it when she is a bit older, or should I jus give it a shot now?

How old would you say Gypsy is bye looking at her? Is there a way to tell? She has actually grown quite a bit scince we got her, she was alot smaller when we first brought her home (and much skinnier), but the lady at the pet store didnt know her age...Go Figure!

Thanks again, and I hope you had a very Merry Christmas, and I wish you a safe and Happy New Year!!

Aaaa, what's in a name. I had named mine Bubber (don't ask) and Bubberina for what I thought was the girl. When we found out we had the sexes wrong, we kept the names where they were. Now the poor male is named Bubberina. lol. But my male is the really passive one and the female is nuts! Can't tame her.

I've never even thought of giving these guys veggies. Only crickets and worms and moths. I'm not sure if they are omnivores. Somebody else might know. Mine would probably eat them if I put them in front of them. Their appetites are acary!

I would guess yours is in the 6 month range. My colorful male you saw in the picture is about a year I was told and still not full grown. I don't know if they will put on their colors without the opposite sex to show off for or not. Before we got the male, the female would only do it under very high humidity. Now they all do it all the time. So, be patient. She must need to mature a bit.

Glad to hear she's drinking! Also, has she done the "pushups" yet? It's hilarious. If I ever catch the male doing it I'll try to post a clip. If you've ever seen a bearded dragon do pushups, these agama agamas do it exactly the same. They get really low to the ground, then they pop all the way up as high as they can go, then start their pushups. It's a riot!

Well true, I guess the name doesnt really matter...lol
Anyhow, no I havent seen her do any pushups yet, but I bet that is a RIOT!!
However, one time the whole family (4 of us) were sitting in front of her tank about a month ago, and she ran over to the glass right in front of us. She was staring at us staring at her, and she started to bob her head up and down! At first I thought that was the cutest thing I ever seen, until I read up on it and found out what head bobbing meant....(it said it was a sign of being dominant, as I am sure you know.)
Well that sure burst my bubble!! lol
I have been waiting to see if she will wave next (i would much preffer that..lol) And now I also have push ups to look forward too, YEAH!!

Well, gotta run for now, I will keep you posted.
Take care, ~Schizmsgrl~

Sometimes Gypsy lays in her tank with her back legs streached out and I actually got a pic of it....cute eh?? lol
