what was the first snake you kept in captivity

wayne13114 Dec 24, 2004 02:03 PM

I'm bored and was kind of wondering what your first snake was anyone kept. mine was a Eastern milksnake. after killing many of theese little snakes when I was very young, my grandfather told me they were spotted adders. I got intersted in snakes and got a book and discovered they were harmless constrictors, so from then on I was fasinated by them. this year I will breed them for the first time, hopefully. thanks to all the info you guys have given me, p.s I'm not selling them they are going free

cool, my first snake was a licorice stick black rat snake - most docile thing i've ever seen. I honestly dont believe snakes enjoy being handled, they more tolerate us doing it. But I think she enjoys it! She sees me open the cage and crawls right up onto my arm!

Never bit or even struck at me! wonderful starter snake!

... now i just wish my blue beauty was more like her lol.

wild caught snake--mine was a western hognose. If you mean first snake in general, then my answer is a boa constrictor imperator.

I remember cleaning my carport floor when I was a kid and seeing a tiny shed skin. Upon inspection of the area where the step met the floor there was a small crack and when I poked around, out came a beautiful little s. ringneck snake. I was excited as could be but nothing was more unexpected than then seeing a neonate corn snake also come crawling out! Seeing these two beauties--right at my back door-- and I was HOOKED!
Of course that summer I had the cleanest porch on the block!
I had little to go by other than one of those "Little Golden Books" for reference, but I had lots of green tree frogs and tadpoles to feed them. The corn would eat anoles (chameleons to me at the time) and I had both for years.

A Texas Rat Snake that I caught in my yard (in Louisiana) when I was about 5 or 6. That thing was way longer than I was and it chewed me up pretty good before I got to the house with it, but I didn't care. My mother had a cardiac on the spot and my dad helped me build a cage (actually he did the building and I watched and got in his way and asked about 40 buzillion questions). That was about a half a century ago, but I still remember it like it was yesterday.

I had another one shortly before that that my dad caught crossing the road, but we turned it loose after just a couple of days. I cried for a whole day when we turned it loose and my dad promised me that we could keep the next one we found. I don't think he expected it to be that quick, though....

For me it was the infamous Eastern Garter Snake.

Me too, a pair. The next spring we had babies and gave them out to every kid in the neighborhood.

The first one I caught and kept was an Eastern Yellowbelly Racer that my dad and I saw crossing a road after a storm. I'm surprised I didn't give up on snakes after that guy because he was typically viscious. I guess my determination paid off because for my next birthday my grandfather bought me a gorgeous Corn snake. 25 years later, I'm still hooked!
Good topic!

My first was a rough green snake when I was seven. I got it at this place called Mikes Pet Shop.
