Mystery Bloat

sw0rdf15h Dec 24, 2004 09:03 PM

I was wondering what bloat looked like, my frog is inflated like a balloon, puffed up with air. The thing is though when I put him in the water or feed him he deflates and is normal again. Then the next day it's the same thing. Is this a health issue? I need to know because the store's sick policy is almost up.

Pacmans in general are chubby. All pacmans absorb their water through their skin, if your tank is highly saturated with water then your frog will be highly saturated with water. In a dryer environment, they wont appear so large. Most of the time when you pick up your pac or he gets scared, he will release most of this water and will appear slimmer. Most pac's will also puff up with air in an attempt to make themselves look bigger when a bigger predator (i.e. you) comes along. Once they dont feel threatened they will "unpuff".... Jon

Wether or not your Pacman may have "Bloat", you can look at this article written by EdK. The article only mentions newts, but I suspect that pretty much the same would go for anurans?

What I would think to be the major exception is that most of the anurans that bloat probably do not have kidney damage due to dehydration (like Cynops orientalis) but they can have damage to the kidneys and or liver due to other causes such as infections.
