Decided NOT to sell her. Not yet...

zoolady Dec 24, 2004 09:22 PM

So youknow I was concidering selling my girl. I even had someone here in town that wants her and that I know knows how to deal with large boas. BUT.... I CANT DO IT!! (
I couldnt see parting with my beautiful girl. And my husband isnt really wanting to get rid of her either. It is just his familly. I am ready to tell them to go shove it though!!
We just moved in to a new house and have her tank set up right out in the living room. not only display for guests, but to piss off my inlaws now. lol Now first thing they will see when they come visit is her big tank with her big beautiful self staring at them every time they visit! HAH!
Perhaps some day I will be more williing to part with her. But not now. Not any time soon even. besides, she loves being spoiled with her enviornment. How many Conda owners go through the trouble of keeping an enviornment so natural as this?! Believe me, keeping this means ALOT of weekly cleaning/disinfecting!!! But I think she is worth it. And worth keeping.
So here are some new pics of her back in her tank after moving in to the new place. I had her in a pillow case for abotu 3 days till we got her tank moved and reset up again.
She was VERY happy to have her water and her fogger back!!!!
She's been back in her tank for 2 days now, and hasnt touched her land for more than 2 minutes the whole time. lol

In total stealth in her happy home. Where is the 8ft Anaconda here??? Lean closer....closer.....hahaha

Aha! There she is!!!

Took away her fog for this one. Notice the first place she goes is to the corner waiting for me to GIVE IT BACK!!!!!

And last pic, this one looks awsome "I THINK". Soaking it up as I let the fogger back into her pool. Now, this fogger has made the BIGGEST difference in her well being. As mentioned many times before, it took me 9 months to get her to eat. But once I did this set up, with the pool and the fogger, she now has been eating every 2 weeks (sometimes once a month if I make her wait)
for the past year 1/2 now. she just loves going into stealth under the fog,and sneaking up on her unsuspecting rat (course it dead already) and yanking it into the water. I always hang her rats head right over the water so it looks to her like its drinking. She just loves it all.

I never really post here, but if you dont want to get rid of her and your husband doesnt either, then y would you even think about selling her? Damn, If a snake would keep my in-laws out of my house, I would have mine displayed at the front door..
By the way, Nice setup and sweet green

Well, Like I mentioned it it a weekly cleaning chore to keep it clean and disinfected.
but I use 2 cat litter boxes filled with marble rocks on the bottom and moss on top...which also has to be replaced from time to time to keep it clean and fresh. I zip tied the two boxes together otherwise she pushes them apart and they end up on separate sides of the tank. lol
And of course her log.
It IS enough land for her FOR NOW. Though I imagine I will be getting her a bigger cage by the end of the year with BIGGER boxes..and maybe even an extra one. But for now, she curls up nicely in the corner of the one in the far corner. She rarely ever sits in them both or just the one in the front. She is either in her water or curled up in the corner on her land, usually under her log somewhat. Have to clean and disinfect the log each week too. Otherwise it grows crap on it. Learned that fast. Each week I pump the water out completely and disinfect the whole tank. Clean and disinfect the rocks. And wash the moss. I replace the moss usually one a month or once every 2 months. just depends on how it kept up. I do heat the water... I use a heating pad under the tank and a red heat bulb on top. Though during the summer the heat pad gets turned off, and I just use the lamp. Otherwise it gets too warm in there. I switch the heat lamp from the red heat to a UV lamp. UV's are good for snakes skin. I know most people in here dont use the lamps. But I have seen MUCH improvement in all my snakes skin and sheds using the UV rays.
So drain water, dinifect and clean tank, moss, log, and rocks, each week.
It is just the land, then I fill the rest of the tank with water. Which she just loves. the rocks in the bottom of the litter pans keep them from floating in the water.
The fogger...keeps humidity and gives her that stealth and ability to hide, which she LOVES too. Have to replace the fogger piece every feew month though. It wears out fast. So I dont keep it going ALL the time. A few days each week I will turn it off. Especially if she is in her water anyhow.
I've had her in this set up for 1 1/2 years now...perhaps a bit longer. Not exactly certain on the dates!! But she has been in heaven and is VERY healthy ever since I did this.
I am going to get some more plants to put across the backround for her. She seems to enjoy these too.
the lid is a cutom made one. Built it with a friend of mine. Doenst keep in humidity too well. Thats why the fogger REALLY helps!! And so does the moss.
the lids slide outward. Cant be pushed or pulled up. they only slide. And they have latches and locks on each side. So no little ones can open the lid either!

As for my INLAWS and getting rid of her...
My inlaws are CONSTANTLY coming to visit. Yes, I woud LOVE to keep them away if I could!!! But the snake doesnt keep them away. they dont have a problem with her in general. It is the fact that we have a 1 year old, and a baby on the way too. this scares them. A big snake, and little babies. My rattlesnake soent bother them a bit. But the Conda does. Go figure.
they wanted us to get rid of her for our kids safety. And EVERY time they visit, this is something that is brought up about 50 times before they leave!!! And every time they call too. It is SO annoying. It got to the pint where, yes, I was ready to sell her. they had won the battle. But then, my hubby and I talked about it, and we both decided that we werent going to let her win this one. So not only are we keeping her, but now she is diplayed right out in the living room. hahaha
As much as I would like them NOT to visit so often, want them to shut up, and just leave me alone, I cant. My husband is a familly going man. And his mom IS his familly. And HAS raised him well, loved him, and done so much for him. I cant just say she cant visit. She only comes to see the baby of course. Which is another story all together. needless to say we dont know how to raise our child, or anything about her personality or anything. HAH.
Sad, they live 8 hours from us, and still manage to drive down AT LEAST once a month. We would like mabe once...every 2-4 months. But this idea just doenst fly with the mother in law.
Course, most grandmas get to see thier grandchildren on a weekly basis I am sure, which wouldnt be a problem, if she would just shut up and let us run our lives and raise our kids the way we want choose to.
well, enough about her.
We are keeping our snake and that is that.
And thanks for the compliments on the tank. I will be sure to take more as she grows and all...and especially when I upgrade the tank!!! Course, some day she will end up with her own room. lol

This was a ton of work and there is a fogger and waterfall in here as well. I quit with it though because the anaconda told me she cared less about me having to clean all the junk in there. Anyway...that tank is somewhat fine for now (i think you have a touch too much water but if she is healthy its all good. An 8 ft anaconda though is about ready for a new environment not in the living room. The size is fine right now but any large boid should be locked in a secure cage and locked inside its own room. It does not appear that you cage has a key. I could be wrong. Anyway, i am glad you decided to keep her and she is beautiful but i hope you are prepared to be responsible when she gets a little bigger.

WTF!!! I don't even want to know what plush shark toy & beachball is for. Other than those 2 items I think your set up looks good. And is that deer antler I see by the ball?

LMAO, I was wondering the same thing. I love all the plants though...except Siren would just tip the potted ones over and make a huge mess. HAH!

There ARE locks on both ends of the cage. As I mentioned, the lids slide outward and there are LOCKED latches on both ends.

She will still be in the living room with her next cage...as our living room is HUGE.
But as she gets too big for a tank of any kind, and needs something cutom built....she will just end up geting her own room. But for now, she is out here.
She loves being out here too. she is very active for a Conda.
Likes to watch us and check things out that are going on outside her tank.

As for her water... I say, there can NEVER be too much water for a Conda!!! At least for a Green. I dont know much about Yellows. As long as there is enough land for her to lay on, the rest can be water. They spend most thier lives in the wild in the water. And Siren just LOVES it!!! the more water the better. She wont even EAT if her water level isnt high enough for her liking. And if there isnt enough room for her to stretch out in it. She is spoiled, I know. And I know it will get harder to do as she gets bigger. But I am prepared for that. I dont mind taking the extra time for cleaning and all for my girl. It is a stress reliever and is fun for me.

I cant wait till 2006. that is when we will be getting her new tank.... IF she doesnt grow too fast this year.. Otherwise, I get to get one sooner.
