Chlorhexidine Diacetate(Nolvasan) vs Plain old Chlorhexidine vs Chlorhexidine Gluconate

jrbl Dec 25, 2004 12:42 AM

Hi,
I was wondering if there is any benefit to using Chlorhexidine Diacetate(nolvasan) over plain Chlorhexidine or Chlorhexidine Gluconate, is there? The Chlorhexidine and Chlorhexidine Gluconate seem to be cheaper, so if nolvasan is no better I might
as well save a few bucks. What, if any difference is there among these chemicals? I have been using "Simple Green" and hite vinegar for cleaning, but have been wanting to use nolvasan for a couple years. Just now getting around to it. I used to work as a veterianry assitant at a local zoo, and they pretty much used nolvasan for everything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Josh

There are differences but I don't know of any studies that relate specifically to reptiles and their common viral and microbrial contaminants.

Remember that neither of these compounds has great activity in the presence of organic matter. Given that at least occasional use of a double-disinfectant regime is required by reptiles I'd just go with the cheaper product.

One has alcholol and one does not. I agree with Chris, cheaper is better when it comes to this type of chemical. It is like buying the Walmart anacitominicen(sp?) as opossed to tylonel. But I have seen that is does breakdown urates and poo... Also works great on blood.. There is no reason to buy Virosan just get the generic....
