Mouth Rot in Caimans?

caimanbite Dec 25, 2004 01:39 AM

I recently purchased another spec caiman through this site and was pleased with her when she arrived. Once I got the tape off of her mouth I came to realize that her jaw line and teeth were rotting and there were maggots crawling around her jaw under the tape. I cleaned her up some and starting checking on what could cause this to happen and what exactly it maybe? My best guess is mouth rot. Black teeth and tissue surrounding them, the smell of rotting flesh, swelling inside the jaw, teeth falling out of the rotten areas. I am not new at caimans by any means. I have 7 others and are all perfectly healthly. This is just the first time to deal with something of this nature and am asking for advise on what it might be and how to cure this problem that I have been handed.
thanks

I dont know what to say other than to seek out a Vet ASAP!!

But that is just terrible, I cant believe someone would sell you a animal in that condition, exspecialy without informing you.

I would get my money back if I were you!! That is 4-sure a animal that should have been donated to someone that was willing to provide care, not sold!!

in my life i have never seen such a infection on an animal some one should be jailed but the fact it is still alive proves the resilance of that animal good luck find a vet this animal needs alot of TLC WHO SOLD IT TO YOU

That is truly disturbing. Thats a huge problem buying animals "sight unseen", running the risk of meeting a fraudulant seller. Is this a person selling their "pet" or is it a commercial sight?

Sincerely,

Rob
