A few questions about our crocodile skink

munchkins Dec 25, 2004 06:09 PM

We bought a captive bred crocodile skink on December 17. It is about 3-4 inches total, including the tail. Any ideas on how old it might be? I understand that they can get about 6 inches long, including their tail. It has been living in a 15 gallon high glass tank for about a week. We have been giving it 1/4 inch or smaller crix, which it has been eating with no problem. Santa brought it a nice 50 gallon breeder tank for Christmas, but it will probably be a while before it is big enough for that size. He has lots of mosses, some magnolia leaves, a few plants, a hide box, a big water/soaking bowl, and a tree branch for climbing in there. He also has a UV light on top of the tank. I had read that they like mealworms, so we just bought some mealworms for him, but they are pretty big, even though they are normal size mealies. What else does it need? His name is Fido, due to the barking that he does to scare us off.

I have had my boy for almost 2 years.I keep him in a plastic cage with holes on the lid.No substrate, only a decorated aquarium plastic paper. In my humble opinion they need a dry area too,so i keep the bottom of his cage dry but he has a huge bowl of water to go if he feels like taking a bath, what he does very often.I feed him mealworms, gut loaded mealworms, only.He doesnt accept anything else.I didnt put in his cage any UVB lights but i put him outdoors when its sunny but not too hot.About the weather temp i keep it between 78-82F.
I never saw a croc with the spots yours has.Soo cute!I dont know whether those spots will disappear with age. They make wonderful and very easy to raise pets but dont expect them to tame!

Your quite lucky that you got a CB. I heard most croc skinks are WC and are loaded with paracites. I also read that they may eat some small feeder fish (just make sure they are clean) when they are older, and supposedly they also like earthworms as well. Your setup sounds great and i think it will be no problem 4 him. Good luck on your new pet ^^.
