Humidity

Gray_Bandit Dec 25, 2004 09:50 PM

I've been doing a lot of research on the black rats and one of my concerns is humidity, but I can't find anything on it. how much humidity should they have? and to be honest this is the first snake I've really had. i've had garters before, but they too were wild caught and one escaped, but I was around 10 then and have more experience now. rats are awsome and I'm glad to hear they reach a descent size as I like bigger snakes. thanks

black rats dont need to be misted or anything... i dont have to do anything special for mine... it stays around 50% or so and i have no problem.

check out the care sheet in my signature.

With the wide range of black rats they can handle a pretty wide range of humidity.
As a general rule (I use) just make sure to have a large water bowl and if using a screen top cover at least half of the top.
This is usually suffecient for black rats

I'm in the Socialist Republik of Kalifornia. It's very dry here, but my black rats do just fine. Watch for over-soaking in a water dish. I've had two of my black rats develop water blisters from coiling up in the water dish for extended periods.

The fact that they are soaking to the point of blisters tells me your humidity is too low. Could I suggest a moist hide spot or daily misting? I've never had a Rat Snake soak to the point.

You raise a good point, Mark. Last winter I had them on a very dessicating commercial substrate, which doubtless made them head for the water dish. Now that they're on newspaper in their new enclosures, they're not soaking like before. Thanks.

Sure looks like a happy camper. Nice snake!
