Cycling & Antibotic therapy questions for Tylan.........................more

East TN Reptile Dec 26, 2004 08:24 AM

I've always cycled my boas for 8 - 10 weeks without feeding. I read where Jeff Ronne doesn't cycle and has great success.
I took ALL my adult boas (most are new stock) I ALWAYS keep my boas in seperate cages...except for breeding & stopped feeding.
Every year I do this. Out of 15 yrs of breeding, 1 fmale has become gravid.
When I cycle them, then they breed. Why would my new boas that are old enough & big enough not breed when not cycled?
I live in TN. Daylight is down to 11 hrs a day vs. 16 - 17 hrs per day
I've paired every male to every female, use multiple males & fresh sheds of male & females.............nothing
So now I guess I will have to start a cycle period. If ANYONE has thought, opinions or a "reciepe" for non cycled boas breeding..........................PLEASE REPLY !
2nd question. My adult female Anery who is caged in a Boaphile cage inside a heated room, came down with a BAD resp infection (how, I don't know)
I got my dosage calculations ( being a nurse sure didn't hurt in that dept.) She's had 5 doses & is doing ALOT better.
Now, from being a nurse, I know antibiotics work the best in ALL the doses are gave.Does anyone know how many to give? I give 1/2 ml sub Q every 3 days
I know in humans as well as animals that if ya start feeling better or the snake starts doing better........you MUST continue with the antibiotic treatment for a safe measure or the animals infection will start up again. This time the antibiotic being used will NOT work. Stoping medication will only kill the weak germs and the stronger ones that started the resp. infection will be amune to the antibiotic ya started out with.
So, bottom line.....does anyone know how many dosages a 12 lb boa should receive & when to stop antibiotic therapy?
Thanks in advance for ANY info or a point in the right direction
HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU & YOURS,

50 mg Tylosine (Tylan) per Kg of snake....Use Tylan 200, it will cut your dose by 75%.
If the snake responds well give up to 8 doses every three days (sub q), this is the most I've administered, but I know other quality breeders who have used Tylan more often than this (every other day), and for greater periods of time with no ill effects. Just be sure to get a culture AND sensitivity done fist by a vet....and if it comes back negative from them...then I would use the Tylan, mycoplasms will not show in this type of lab test...they require a much longer test for them to culture.

Good luck,
Philip

The dosage calculation I got was 25 ml per pound. I've used 1/2 ml sub q every 3 days.
she has really cleared up....ALOT ! She still won't eat, but in time, she will.
I also raised the heat in her cage & mist her with warm water twice a day. Seems to be working. My fingers are crossed !
Thanks for the reply Phil,
