i've treated myself to a female albino pacman frog for christmas this year. i named her Mona because she has a smile like the Mona Lisa...ha.

anyways, just a few questions...

she's still a baby, about the size of a 50 cent piece but has grown since i got her a week and a half ago. (she was gumball sized then). she eats 2 crickets every other day. but the last two times i've fed her, she's only eaten one. so now there are two loose crickets still in her tank. will she eventually eat them when shes hungry? or should i take them out, gut load them again, and reoffer them to her.

also, i use a redlight at night of a lower wattage to drop the tank temp down to 75, and a daylight bulb during the day to increase the temp to 80-82 F. are these ok temps? also, what should the humidity be at? my gauge shows its anywhere between 60-80 depending on how often i am misting.

i use an undertank heater as well, calcium drops for her water bowl, reptical sprinkled over gutloaded crickets twice a week, mistimize in her misting water. She is housed in a 5 gallon tank with coconut fiber soil, terrium moss in one corner and pothos leaves that are on hooks around the top of the tank to provide shade and security from the light above. i keep pebbles in her corner water dish so she wont drown as well.

so far am i doing everything right? any tips and advice on keeping pacmans would be appreciated. this is my first terrestrial frog, but i am no stranger to keeping herps.

also, how quickly do they reach adult size? (i do have a 10 gallon in the wings for when she gets cupcake sized and larger)

A few pointers:

1. Don't leav the crickets in the tank, they may bite the frog. Scary story: I've heard of a person who bought a Leopard Gecko who wouldn't eat. So he threw around 20 crickets in the tank, and the next day the crickets had killed the Leopard Gecko and was eating from it's back.
This is an extreme example though, but still, leaving crickets in the tank is not a good idea.

2.Another good thing is to ry to get your frog to eat from tonges, which reduces the risk of swallowing substrate (That in some rare cases may lead to impaction) and you can keep track on how much the frog is eating.

3.Undertankheater is not the best choice, these frogs sometimes bury to escape the heat, this isn't working with an undertankheater.

4.Temperatures should be around 75 during the day, they can be low 80:s aswell, but around 75 is the optimal temperature.

5.Humidity is good, it can reach from 50-80%

6.The calcium drops in the waterbowl I'm not sure about, whether they are healthy or not. I don't use them, it fine just to dust the crickets in calcium supplement, and also preferably gut-loading them.
7.They reach adult size from about 1-2 years. They usually reach from 3-6 inches.

Hope it helped, and good luck with your new frog.

hi,

thanks so much for the GREAT advice!

i had a feeling leaving crickets with the frogs was bad. i do remember a lepoard gecko that got his tail chewed off by crickets.

i'll keep them in the gut loaded container until until she eats them.

also, Mona the pacman, is very VERY shy, she wont eat if im watching, or take food from tongs. i have to walk away and then come back to a tank empty of crickets. i dont know why she's like this, but all the other pacman frogs at work greedily eat no matter who is watching them. could something be wrong? or is she jsut not tame enough yet?

You're welcome
Maybe the shyness will pass, and maybe it won't. I have heard of Pacmans just like yours, that won't eat when anybody is watching.

A few of mine were like that for a while and then they got over it. The others would demolish the second you drop anything into the tank. Every pac's tude is different.
