Gonysoma ocxycephela hatchlings!!!

uromastyx1 Dec 26, 2004 11:14 AM

I have been incubating these little guys for over 3.5 months. I got a WC female which had 6 eggs. One of the eggs died straight away, and two were dead in shell. I had to assist these little guys coz the egg shells were so thick. I cut them open on 23rd, I only open a small section of the top and didn't damage the membrane and the decided to hatch for me! One hatched on xmas eve and the other two hatched yesterday. One is a strange colour, the mother was a silver, do you think it could be a silver as well?

Congratulations... Now hang onto them and raise them up into breeders. Or sell them to me

That sounds like a good amount of time. Longer incubation periods typically lead to higher hatch rates with this genus.

Still hard to say. Green imports are know for producing both silver and green offspring with no apparent blending. This is the first time I've heard of a silver female producing greens, although it's long been suspected that will happen.

My best guess is that this specimen will grow into a typical silver specimen or perhaps one of the high orange specimens like one of my females.

It probably also depends on the sex. Males and females of the silver type tend to look quite different (based on relatively small sample size, to be fair).

Thanks for that Chris, I must say it was a bit of a shock when they actually went full term, as the mother died about a month after getting her. Hopefully these babies will feed and grow well, they seem very healthy and have an aggresive personality lol.
If I lived in the US I would certainly offer them for sale on here when they are old enough but I am in the UK, and I think I might keep them all anyway coz they are really sweet.
Thanks for everyones kind comments

Best of luck with them. Will you be keeping them? Either way, may they grow up to be part of someone's breeding project--such an awesome species!

As Chris mentioned - your incubation period is about bang on for Gonyosoma...and having to manually pip the eggs is a practice I began to make standard after losing many fully developed embryos that never made it out of their eggs. Once I began slitting the eggs at 90 days - I got 100% on the 19 clutches over 8 years that I bred Gonyosoma...although some babies stayed in their eggs up to 120 days or more.
I never got silver babies from my green adults although I did get a variety of patterning and a range of colors from very pale green to almost entirely blue. I sold almost all of my hatchlings (regrettably!) but those that I saw pics of as adults virtually all grew to be quite solidly green - although 1 male I kept back for several years was very patterned - almost resembling a speckled racer.
I'd love to find CB Gonyos to begin with again - they are a great animal!
