Need help selling my red tail

Nicademus Dec 26, 2004 01:19 PM

Hello,

I've decided to sell my 3 year old redtailed boa. It is a beautifully marked 6' female, perfect health. I'm in college and I will not be able to invest the time into it anymore that it deserves due to my schedule becoming more rigorous.

My first concern is to make sure the snake isn't stressed out during the sale and I get it to a good home. My second concern is making sure I dont get ripped off.

My questions are as follows:

-what is the best way to sell the snake? A reptile show (where I purchased it)? The classifieds here? Ebay? I noticed many people selling snakes on ebay were shipping them nationwide. Is this (as I'd think) stressful to the snake? Should I avoid doing that?

-how much should I expect for it? It is beautifully marked; very mild mannered (never bitten anyone; never struck at anyone), a female in perfect health. I believe it is a columbian.

-any other tips? Thanks a lot in advance.

Nick

There are many answers to those questions, What I would say is, Selling it over the internet is a risk, it always is, if you do make sure they send the money order first, and if they send a personal check, make sure your bank clears the check before you send your animal. With sending animals across country, I have always used UPS Next Day Air, it is a bit more expensive than Fed-ex and DHL, but I have never had one problem with UPS, and I have had many problems with fed-ex and DHL, dead animals ect.ect.... depending on how fast you need to sell your boa, I would try and look for a local sale, example, local paper, pet shops, ect.ect. that way you can meet the person you are selling it too. It also depends on what type of boa you are selling, I don't know what you paid for it, but if its a normal colombian, i am sorry to say adults go for pretty cheap, infact there are lots for adoption already. I do see a few on kingsnake.com. I think it costs about $20-$25 for one month of kingsnake.com, I would try for a local sale first and then try Kingsnake.com if you don't want to ship. If you do ship they are usually fine, if you use Next Day services, this time of year you should use heat packs, and depending on how large the boa is, bigger boas should be sent throught Delta Dash, which can be pretty spendy about $75-$100, Just depends on how big your boa is. I hope that helps a little, and I hope you also get some more replies to see what other people think. Good Luck and happy new year....

Put an ad in the newspaper to try and sell it. I wouldn't ship at this time of year if I didnt have to.
It would help if the peole here knew where you lived. Maybe someone lives close to you and the snake won't have to travel.
