Finally - I have the new misting system all setup...

Antegy Dec 26, 2004 10:26 PM

I took some time out from the holiday hooplah early today and got my new PM-60 misting system all setup on my burm's cage. I situated it so that the area to be misted is directly beneath the radiant heat panel (which I also just recently installed).

So far it seems to be working great. Every two hours it pumps a relatively fine mist/spray into the cage for one minute. So far its up to about 70% RH in there and holding steady. I'll be watching it closely for the first couple of days to make any fine adjustments to the pump settings if necessary.

I got a 5 gallon resovoir (from a used water bubbler jug) and located it directly beneath the usage point. I drilled a 1/4" hole in the cap to insert the suction tubing, and then another hole ( 1/16" ) to allow air to bleed into the container as it empties.:

Keeping the container capped will help keep out debris that could damage the pump or clog the spray nozzles. I also used filtered water to avoid debris and mineral build up.

Then I threw together a stand to mount the resovoir and pump. The tubing runs from close to the bottom of the resovoir, up through the pump, up behind the cage (along one of the grooves), across the light shroud, then terminates at equal distances from an inline tee that feeds each nozzle (to assure equal pressure drop at each nozzle):

I mounted the pump above the level of the resovoir to avoid any potential siphoning when the pump is not on.

The spray nozzles (while spraying):

I tested these nozzles at work before I brought them home. They generate a relatively fine mist running at about 30psig.

Orientation of the two nozzles (front view):

From the front you can see that I installed the two nozzles at the same height. I couldn't think of any benefit from doing it any other way. You can also see their orientation under the heat panel.

Orientation of the two nozzles (side view):

From the side you can see the relative spacing of the two nozzles, and again their orientation under the heat panel.

Okay, so that's my setup as it stands. What do you think? Could I have done it better with a different approach? Am I overlooking anything? Please let me know what you think, as I'm always open to positive feedback and creative ideas.

Thanks,
- Mark

Did the mister come with everying you needed
I bet that bottle of water will last along time..

Well, the misting system did pretty much come with everything it needed. All I needed was to mount the pump - which has mounting brackets, and definitely doesn't seem to be designed to be used without being mounted. It also didn't come with any hardware for mounting. I also had to fix up the spray nozzles before I could use them, as each one leaked badly in the condition they arrived in. So I took them apart, employed a healthy amount of thread seal, and reseated all of the parts of the nozzles. I was also a little disappointed that they didn't offer a resovoir with the system. I kind of lucked out finding that 5 gallon water bottle (my girlfriend actually got it for me, per chance).

I'm also kind of kicking myself at this point too because later in the day after I installed the system I went out to Home Depot to pick up a couple of things I needed. Well, while I was there I just happened to notice that they had for sale the same digital timer that came with the setup. So it was nothing special really - quite a common item. At this point I put two and two together and realized that I could have probably gotten the pump just as easily, and yes, the tubing too. All in all, my point is that I probably could have gone out, did a bit of shopping around and gotten all the same parts for much less money. Oh well, I take complete responsibility for not researching my options first. Hopefully I'll learn a lesson from this and not let anything like this happen again.

Still, I'm happy with the system, and it seems to be working great. So - I got what I asked for. Can't complain about that.

I have come to expect nothing less than an elaborate and descriptive post from you Antegy.
I think the setup looks good and the placement of the nozzles is optimal.
I will be getting the misting system from bigappleherp.com. Its $70 cheaper than its competitor on the market, and has the same cycles per day and features. Its supposed to be quieter as well. Im open to input from anyone who owns one whether or not they have had good experience with them.
Once again, nice setup.

I hope my posts aren't 'elaborate and descriptive' to the point that they are annoying and boring! Let me know if that's the case - really!

I'm glad to hear you got a better deal on a misting system. Does the one you're getting come with a resovoir (mine didn't)? As for the noise, don't worry about it. If it's anything like the pump I got it's so quite you'll hardly notice it at all.

Yes the one I'm getting comes with a resevoir. I should have it by next week and Ill post my findings for those who care. I know I appreciate first hand opinions on different products out there on the market.
Elaborate and descriptive in a positive informative way, not boring.

I actually don't hang out on myspace much at all. I setup a profile on there thinking I would get into it, but I don't think my personality lends itself to that kind of social what-ever-it-would-be-called. You might want to check out a band called Unearth though. We (meaning, my band before we broke up) used to play with those guys back in the day. They're a bit more metal than I like (I'm more into hardcore generally), but they do what they do quite well.
