new to tortoises give me some tips!

hey y'all! i bought an africian spurred tortoise, a new hatchling. i would like to know how to sex them... also my tortoise, which ive named Brock, made a slight sqeek, is that normal? and last but not least, it seems as if he has as if he has a stuffed up nose.. i could be wrong. but i dont want to take any chances with my percious Brock. thank you in advance!

The first thing I always do with any new pet, is take it to the vet to get it checked out. Sounds like your tortoise could have a respiratory infection which needs to get checked out right away. Tortoises can get sick easily, and they get healthy very slowly.

As for sexing your new pet, don't get too attatched to the name since you may have to change it in a few years. Typically you can't tell if it's a boy or a girl until they reach sexually maturity which can be anywhere from 3 to 5 years.

If you do a search in this forum, you'll find some good posts with pictures on how to tell if it's a boy or a girl. In the mean time... find a good herp vet ASAP.
