couple questions

i was just wondering if i had my tank set up right. during the day i have a sun glo light a red light and an uth going on the hot side it gets to about 89 or close too. the cold side is usually around 78. at night i only have the red light on and it gets to about 77 on the hot side and about 72-74 on the cold side. is this ok should there be more or less variation. also my gecko wont eat crickets. i powder them with calcium and a multi vitimin and put them in a glass dish with their back legs ripped off. he never eats them if theyre in the dish. i think he might not be able to see them or something if theyre in the dish because theyre white like the paper towel and the dish is kind of crystal cut (its an old ashtray). sometimes if they get out hell eat them. i keep mealworms in there and he sometimes will eat one.

thanks in advance for your help.

Your temps sound fine. Just make sure they don't get any higher. If your gecko wont eat of out a dish yet, you might have to just drop crickets in the cage one by one and let him eat them that way. Just make sure to pick up all crickets after he's done eating.

You can also show him the dish by making him follow a cricket in your hand and then dropping it in the dish when he's looking. He should see where it went and go after it.

yea your temps sound fine...all i have on mine is a 75 watt night-bulb (red) and mine fair well...anyway...as far as them eating...i've found that they like to 'hunt' there food...i suggest not ripping there legs off...put a small ammount of calci-dust in a bag...put your crickets in the bag and shake...than drop the freshly calci-coated crickets in the cage and let them hop around...i'm sure your leo will enjoy the hunt and eat them ;] try putting mealie's in the dish...as long as there's movement they'll try to attack what's moving...

i tried that at first but he was afraid of the crix. they would just hop all over him and he wouldnt move. i tried putting 5 in there and at one point there were three of them on top of him and he wouldnt move. thats when i decided to rip their legs off and put them in a dish. i also keep mealies in there all the time and sometimes he eats them.

Some leos just don't like crickets. I have one juvenile who has literally never eaten a cricket. She is afraid of them too lol. But she gobbles up mealworms. It sounds like you've given crickets a good try, so at least for now forget the crickets and just feed him mealworms.

But, is he eating enough? Is he thin?

geckobill Dec 29, 2004 07:52 PM

I keep mealworms in there all the time and he occasionally eats them. he dosent seem to be verry skinny, i dont have a good pic of him out. and he is very active at night. he ate crickets when they werent dusted before. i think he may not like the taste of the cricket dust and calcium/d3 dust. hes not skinny but dosent seem to be gaining any weight either.

i didnt mean to post a picture not sure what happened.
