Introducing male bearded dragons

sasi Dec 27, 2004 10:19 AM

We have two male beardies, one is 1 year old and the other about 2 years of age. We have had them for a year in separate aquariums. We'd hoped the "baby" was a female but when he was big enough to sex we found a second male. We just want the two of them for pets, not hoping to breed. What we are asking is for advise about how to introduce them so they can live together in a larger aquarium. Are two male beardies compatible? We tried to let them out to play together once a few months ago, but they displayed aggressive behavior right away so we separated them again.

Sorry, you can't house 2 males together. The only combination that you can sometimes get away with is 2 females (I really don't even recomend that). Beardies are solitary creatures and do much better alone.

Never, ever, ever put two male beardies together. They are very territorial and will often fight to the death.

Deffinitely not a good ideal to house two males together, especially considering they have not been kept together at all. The only way to keep them in the same cage is if that cage is HUGE! and I mean something the size of a room. (10'x4'x2' or more) to ensure both can stay in their individual terrirtories. Even then they may be stressed. Much better to just keep them in separate cages.

Thanks for the replys. It's unanimous - males cannot cohabit. We only have room for one tanks, if we do it right. Any suggestions on how to find a good home for one of them? I like them both, as does the family, so we can't even decide who to keep & who to let go. I could do it, though if I am sure they are going to a good home. I need suggestions about how to find one of them a new home.

I dunno if thats totally true, My friend housed to adult males in a 120 gallon cage and they did fine...but i think its rare oh well just letting you guys know not arguing or looking for a tongue lashing.....YOU WIN lol

you mentioned getting a larger tank...if you chose a 120 or larger you could easily add an opaque 'seperator' in the center. That way you could keep both beardies and they could not get at each other.

Just a thought...

I think as long as the divider is not see through and they dont spot each other, otherwise high stress will become a factor...but like I said theres still a chance.
