Wanting to get some leopards...

northwestbeardie Dec 27, 2004 12:15 PM

I currently own 2 bearded dragons and breed them. I really want to ad some leopards to my collection because i just absolutely love the way they look. I know that they can be housed in relatively small enclosures compared to beardies and that the temps are waaaaaaaaay lower. What would you suggest I start off with? Males, females, both? Should i keep them seperated until I know more about them or is the reeding and care similar to that of bearded dragons? I also know that they can eat mealworms as a staple and i breed mealworms so that isn't a problem of getting and housing food. Thanks for any and all info.

Just start off getting one. They can be housed their hole life in a 10 gallon tank. I currently own 4 beardeds and 19 leos not including hatchlings. Leos are deff easier to house and maintain in my opinion. I use racks to house my leos. I house 1-3 hatchlings in 6qt sterilites until they are about 2 weeks, and then they each get their own 15qt. I house a single male or pairs of females in 32qts and only put the males in with them for a few days at a time when breeding. I use 3" flexwatt for belly heat and control it using a thermostat. I keep my temps about 90 degrees on the warm side and 75-80 on the cool. I also use mealies as a staple diet and have had excellent results. I only use crickets for finicky eaters, then I try and get them over to mealies as soon as I can. I breed the mealies as well which makes keeping leos way less costly then beardeds.

Start off with just one gecko. It doesn't matter what sex, both can be really tame. If you wanna learn a lot about leos, go to the page I link below.

Hey there...i just got my beardie...i've had my 4 leo's for a couple months now and have done a lot of research on them...anyway...i agree with everyone else...start off with one...or if you want to eventually breed them...you can house 2 females with 1 male and everything should stay copasetic...from what i've read males get territorial so more than 1 male should be housed seperately...i'd go with a 20 long if i were you...i have 4 in a 20 long and they cohabitate nicely...if you do plan to get males and females...males become sexually mature at about 10 months...whereas females at 12...so if you get a male make sure to pull him out for the extra 2 months of maturity required for females (either way you won't know the sex until after about 6 months)...anyway sorry i'm rambling...

yo get started a 20 gal long with 1 leo or maybe 2 until you get aquanted with keeping them...all they need is a nocturnal light (a red one) and don't need a UV-B or basking lamp...they like to hide...so make sure to include at least 1 hide per gecko (a deli dish with a hole in it does well)...my cage stays around 80-84 degrees on the hot side and around 75-78 on the cool side

sorry rambling again lol...anyway good luck with your leo's...just check the care-sheets on the site and read thru some postings...this site did me very well when it came to learning about these guys...again good luck ;D
