More than likely they are not going to like it much, and with todays cameras you have so much option not to with such a subject, it's probably best if you don't. Is there a reason you want to use flash as opposed to incandesent or other continous lighting source?

Give me some info on what you want to do and I can help

I haven't been able to get a good picture unless I use flash. I'm new to photography, maybe there's another way to get better pics?

Well, are you using digital or film? (what make of camera?)

Do you want to take good snapshots, or good "portrait" type of images?

do you want to take them in the cage or just with a clean simple background?

Do you want flat normal light or more dramatic type of light?

If you answer these I should be able to have you on your way to take some good images.

Find a window that the light comes through pretty good and slide a table up against it. Drape a plain old white sheet over the window and across the table, this creates a nice difussed light source with a clean neutral background. There are other ways also but direct flash doesn't make a very nice picture anyway so I'd avoid it.
