What is this shelf liner I hear about?? Any photos?

photojoe Dec 27, 2004 05:31 PM

I don't know what I'd even be looking for if I went to Walmart to look - and they don't have it online.

Can anyone further describe it, and maybe even have a photo of what it looksl ike in the cage?

Thanks

I don't have any pics of it, I think Robyn does if she sees this. It's over with the dish drainers and stuff like that. It comes in a roll and is rubbery. The most popular brand is Duck but others make it also. There are 2 major kinds, one with holes (waffle pattern) and a solid one that's textured, you want the solid one. Hope that helps some.

one is about a 1/4" thick and is absorbant.... The other is thinner and won't abosrb the fluid in from the poopy....... Since you are tryint op keep smell down and want low mantenance.... the non-absorbant type would be the way to go!

it is very easy to keep clean and is not slippery. Look for "DUCK" brand shelf liner at the store. Do not get the kind with the holes in it...this one is solid and a little bumpy/slight texture. It will have a faint rubbery smell that will go away in a day or 2.

last year someone posted detailed pictures --step-by-step. I took some scrap plywood and created a 'frame' and used angle brackets to hold up the ledges. I also made sure it was 'free standing'. Then I took some 1 inch styrofoam and covered the wood (I used liquid nails that is styrofoam safe to glue it together)-- and used my hands to 'rough cut' it. I added small stacks of styrofoam to create the cave support (Drako is sound asleep brumating in the cave right now). I used a few thin layers of mixed colored tile grout (nutmeg color)(using gloved hands to apply) and waited a day between layers for it to dry. Once dry I gave it a few coats of acrylic sealer. It took about 10 days total--including drying time...about 2 hours of total work and about $25.

It is important to MEASURE your top opening--this one barely fits...Next week I plan on starting a different one--but my first attempt came out very well...

That is really cool! I remeber that post with the rock wall. He had also used an old dresser to make an enclosure... You did a great job with that rock Wall! I think I remeber you posting it now that I think about the homemade rockwall craze that he started......LOL.... I've gotta try that this winter... I do have a garage now that I've moved!
