Bathing New Euros that just come in from the cold...

Johnstud56 Dec 28, 2004 12:24 PM

I have 2 new euros coming in today, should I place them in warm water for a lil while or go directly to the tank?

John, my best advice would be to just go straight from the box to the cage. I would give them 3-4 days to acclimate to thier new home also so I would recommend against handling for that time period. There is no need to add stress to the Uro's after being in a dark cold box for the past 12 to 20 hours. I would place them under the basking spot and sit a few feet away and just watch.

that you should soak them in case they became dehydrated on the trip because they were without food for a couple days before and during the trip and without water during the trip and then after that not handle them for a couple days

That's correct. When I got my 2 saharan's (Phoebe and Orion*the first two*) I was sent a letter that said to place them in hot water, as hot as my hand could stand. Make sure you keep their faces out of the water and their ear holes! If you want them to get some water, then take your finger, put it in the water and rub along their mouth so it can seep in.

It's because they are lethargic that this needs to happen. Since it is also cold I suggest using a towel that has been warmed in the dryer to dry them off in. If you have someone who can help you, then have them help you.

with both of you on the soaking, especially the as hot as your hand can handle. Maybe soaking a new uro is standard for a fresh import that has yet to be acclimated but that sounds ridiculous for a healthy uro. If you purchase a healthy Uro it will not be dehydrated from being in a box overnight. I am curious to hear more opinions on this. Johnstudd, what did you end up doing? How are the little ones doing?

well like i said, i am not 100% sure. but for various reasons i had to ship all my reptiles to my parents' house for winter break and the shipping instructions said to give them water before they left and when they got there. my mom received them and said they all drank and i know my animals are healthy.
either way i don't think it is a huge issue if it looks like a healthy animal and will eat its greens and at the same time i don't think that 10 minutes in warm/hot water will do much more stress than being stuck in a box for 24 or so hours

My opinion:

As to whether or not to soak, I think it would depend on what condition I thought they were in when they arrived. I would certainly offer them water, even if I didn't soak them, though.

As to temperature, I would make the water somewhat warmer than they are, but not a huge difference to prevent shocking their systems.

Just my $.02!

>>>>If you purchase a healthy Uro it will not be dehydrated from being in a box overnight.

Well I purchased mine, and they were shipped overnight. Post Office evidently doesn't believe in getting me my IMPORTANT packages on time.

First time, they were shipped on a Tuesday, I got them on a Friday because the post office screwed up. Since it took them so long I had to soak them. I followed the directions given to me on the letter, and I even called the breeder about it and he said however hot I can stand water to put them in it.

Second time when I got a replacement for my female who came to me sick with pneumonia, post office again lost my replacement, it was supposed to be delivered on September 10, and I got it on September 11, becuase the post office LOST it in transit.

I've never had a problem with soaking them.

However I will tell everyone this: if the post office loses your animal for even 1 day, tell them so. Phoebe died because she had pneumonia that was excelled by the transit period. Phoebe had it, she gave it to Orion my male who died last month, and now the replacement Iris has pneumonia which she got from Orion.

She's doing as good as she can be while have pneumonia.

She is not very cooperative when it comes to getting her meds and she's starting to eat more.

I hope that's a good sign.
