Help- I think something is wrong with my pacman

darkzel Dec 28, 2004 12:30 PM

I got a pacman frog for christmas- Ive had one before, but he went into hibernation and never came out...
Ive never seen this before, though-
I have just moved my frog into its permanent cage, its ten gallons, and Ive put in a heat pad on the bottom. I ahve put leaves in as bedding for now, but when I get more money, Will find soemthing better. He has a litle dish of water and spends most of his time there.
Today, I noticed that he has something sticking out of his mouth. his mouth has looked a little funny since I got him, but not like this
there is something clear and whiteish anhnging out of either side of his mouth, with little blood vessels showing. I dont think this is normal, and I really hope Im not doing something to hurt my frog. any help or advice would be much appriciated.

Maybe he had MBD when you got him? Many times, horned frogs from pet stores are not given enough calcium-rich food (or powdered supplement on their crickets.) I got one awhile ago which looked OK when I bought him, but soon exhibited symptoms like you described; he could not fully close his mouth.
I guess that when they're deprived of calcium at such an early age, the effects cannot be cured. The frog basically looks weak and has weakened and/or deformed bones
Hopefully Colchicine or someone with a bit more scientific knowledge, will jump in.
Are you sure he just doesn't have a cricket leg or some other food item, stuck in his mouth?
I would also advies against using a heatpad. The frogs like to burrow to the bottom of the tank, usually with their bellies flush against the tank floor, and if the frog were atop the pad, this could lead to severe burning or overheating. A reptile heatlamp works good, as long as the tank is not allowed to become overdry.

Well, I dont think it is a cricket leg, as he has not eaten since I got him. I still do not know what to make of the stuff hanging from his mouth- it looks allmost like he has a jellyfish or something in there- I know frogs throw up by getting out there stomach and rubbing it- could this be a side effect of that?
I read that if I can get a liner or soemthing that the frog cant burrow through for the tank bottom, it would be ok- I was thinking maybie some wood or rocks on the very bottom would keep him from burning himself-is that a good diea, or a bad one?
and if he does have a calcium defficaney, is there anything I can do to help him?
thank so much,

Is this what it basically looks like?

There are other reasons for the eversion of the stomach, bacterial infections are one. If this is what you are seeing and it has been going on for more than a day or two you should consider seeking out the aid of a vet.

Yes- that is it, exactly.
I took him to the store where I got him today, to ask if they had ever ahd the same problem, and they said that they hadent. however, they put me in touch with a lady from the zoo, who told me to get rid of the leaves, becasue that could be the problem. since removieing them, it seems to have gone down a little.
however, if it is still the same tomorrow, then I shall definatey call a vet.

thank you,

So it's the stomach sac that is comming out from the mouth? What would be the purpose of this? I mean is the frog doing this beceause of, for example bacterial infections, on purpose for some reason or does it just happen, automatically?

knowing why this happens, strange !

That is the actual stomach there. There are multiple reasons for a frog/toad to vomit some of which are due to distastful/toxic prey, items that are not digesting well, and bacterial infections.
I am not sure of the actual physiological trigger when it comes to the bacterial infections but it is listed as a symptom of aeromonad infections.

Well, its been a day, and Im happy to report that a change of bedding has cuased him to get better. I changed the stuff to peat mss, instead of just elaves from my yard(stupid, I know....)
he still hasent eaten anything, but I think he must definatley be getting better. thank you all so much for the help youve given me.
