Vision Cages for Pits????

schlange Dec 28, 2004 08:22 PM

Does anyone use vision cages for their pits?? What are your opinions??
I'm planning on buying a few to get some projects going and I thought I'd inquire about the pros/cons of vision cages before spending that pretty penny...
What size would be best for a pair?? I was looking at the V211 which measures 24" W x 22" D x 14" H , but i'm unsure as to if this would be enough space for one? or a breeding pair??
I do appreciate any and all feedback!!!
Patrick

I think that's too small. I use a Boaphile cage with 6 square foot of floorspace for my Sonoran Gophers and basically the same size glass cage for my Southern Pines. It really depends on what types of snakes you're going to be working with. If I had it my way I would have all of my females in cages with 8 square foot of floorspace and the males in 6 footers. Others may disagree, but most people I know like to give their Pits room. Tom Stevens

I agree with the large space requirements for pits.

I have a 4.5 foot pit that I keep in a 55 gal aquarium, and he loves to burrow in the aspen. I'll probably move him into a 75 gal when he outgrows his current residence.

I agree with the other two posters on the size being a little small, I personally have 8 of the vision cages and have used them for a couple of years with no problems. The majority of our large adult pits though are housed in Neodesha cages that are approx. 7 1/2 - 8 1/2 Sq. Ft in floor space ( Height is not really a consdieration ). For a 6 - 8' adult that is about as small as you can go. Hatchlings, yearlings, two year olds etc and some of the smaller pits do fine in sweater and smaller rubbermaid boxes, but the bulls, sonorans, blacks, northerns, southerns, deppei deppei and deppei jani really require more room. As far as the vision cages are concerned though they are holding up fine, are easy to clean and much easier to control tempeture and humidity in than the typical aquarium.

Good Luck,

Nice- that's exactly what i was wondering- i think i'll be going with the vision cage model V332, in which the sizes are 36" W x 28" D x 18" H - that would give them 7 square feet, and i could always upgrade when they get to that point.

Thanks again- everyone in this forum ROCKS!!! (My cohorts that can't tolerate snakes are even amazed at the level of dedication and knowledge everyone has while maintaining a strong feeling of community and support)

Glad to help out. I bet after you get some Pits you will want more, and then if you do upgrade your first ones to larger cages you can fill your original cages with some new Pits! I would also bet people who have unhappy, and flat out mean and angry Pits have them in cages that are too small. These guys appreciate room and are great pets. Post pics when you are all hooked up Tom Stevens

You are more than welcome, I think you will find that pit folks are some of the most dedicated in the herp hobby. A little strange by other's accounts I am told, but we all love these magnificent animals. And I for one am still trying to repay my debt of education to the folks that took so much time up teaching me what little I know. Anytime I can help let me know and as Tom said keep us posted.
