04 Hatchling, I'm not exactly familiar with too many kingsnakes, so can anyone tell me if this snake has an abberant pattern? The bands are broken in a few places...

I would call it aberrant banded.
Nice caliking too.

I would call it banded. A lot of bandeds have breaks, some more than others. Abberant is a combo with stripes, so there is usually some visible striping. Beautiful snake either way.

I believe you can have an aberrantly banded calking with no strping. MHO.

Maybe, but I myself have never seen one. They all have a broken stripe or zigzag with some jumbled up bands on the sides. I saw one that was perfectly banded on one half, and perfectly striped on the second half. I wish I had one of those, it was cool, the best of both worlds.

Yes,
Broken stripes, zig zags and jumbled up bands means......aberrant.
And I too like the half striped, half banded specimens.

Who has the half and half? Ive never seen one offered for sale, I just saw a pic of one. I thought it must have been the only one, just luck. It was a wild caught one too I think.

I remember seeing a pic of one in Perlowin's General Care and Maintenance of Common Kingsnakes. If I remember correctly it was caught in the Carlsbad area.

That sounds about right. I hope I hatch one out one day

This is the closest I've gotten. It is nothing near that wildcaught specimen but I like em.

Not bad. Did you hold it to breed to try again? Maybe you can get closer and closer every time.

jlassiter Dec 29, 2004 09:36 PM

Yes,
It is the same one I posted above in another thread. It will breed in '06 to his sister that has a nice low band count. I also have a wide striped calking from Don Shores that I may breed it to. Only time will tell.

That ones pretty cool too. I would like to see what offspring you get, that should be interesting!

HerperHelmz Dec 30, 2004 12:06 AM

Hey,

You may not be able to see it in the pics, but the snake has broken bands, and then a stripe going down it's tail, I'll check on it for more stuff tomorrow, right now it's digesting a meal.

I see it Michael. Very nice caliking. I would still call it aberrant with the broken bands and little tail stripe.
