Question about submersible heaters

Anita Dec 28, 2004 09:32 PM

Are most submersible heaters easily damaged if they are moved while on but still in the water? They are not lifted from the water but just moved to the other side of a tank. Are there any that are less sensitive to movement? I've had 3 Visi-therm heaters glass break lately. I did not remove them from the water. Sometimes one of the suction cups comes loose so I move it enough to restick the thing being careful not to put pressure on the glass. I had one that came unstuck and was moved some by the current from the Canister filter and shortly thereafter quit working. Is that normal or I'm I just having a run of bad luck? Three were Visi-therms and one was an Acura. All 300 watts. The mail order place is very nice and replacing them for free when I mail the broken ones back. All this has gone on the last month. I was told the Jaeger ones were good but Dr.s Foster & Smith says they don't recommend the top of them submersed even though they are suppose to be completely submersible. I need ones that can be completely submersed. Suggestions anyone?

I have one from Petsmart that has two suction cups and they have never moved it. I also have it behind some rocks and they don't fit back there. That could be why my guys have never moved it.

Never had that happen before with any heaters I have used. Jager are a good brand though so I would go with that.

I gave up long ago on using glass heaters with turtles. I've since converted over to the titanium metal ones - no chance of them shattering by accident due to movement or the turtles banging into them.
