Jet and the vet!

googo151 Dec 29, 2004 02:02 AM

Hey Bloods,
Well, I took Jet to the vet today, and he found what I had suspected all along, a pretty nasty case of ulcerative stomatitis, affecting the upper mandible anteriorly. Well, the nasties were treated with a good debribement of the caseous material, and area was flushed out with ringers. He's also been put on some parenteral antibiotics (Fortaz) to treat it as it did develop a pocket and channel that was affecting the mandible and causing some lose of teeth. I can't say enough good things about the doctor that I took Jet too. The guy new his stuff and was very helpful and understanding, and also, understood that I did not want my big guy to be put on Baytril. At an rate, he is doing well and will recover as I caught it before it got worse. The rest is history, and I'll fill you all in very soon as to the story of this guy (Jet), and the circumstances under which I got him and the nightmare that was.

Hey,
Yeah! can you believe it, I did a little looking up and reading on what the credentials were on the recommended vets in the NYC, area, and found this guy to be pretty highly recommended. At any rate, that was a good thing as he was great. Thanks!

Hey,
Thanks! he's going to pull through I'm sure and is looking pretty good. I'll be on top of it, with his shots and cleaning out the affected area. I'll keep you posted.

Man sorry to here the bad news.Atleast your on top of it.How did you know, or what were the symptoms.Your lucky to got such a good vet.Mine went ahead and gave me Baytril with out telling me what effects it could do to my snakes skin who now has three scars from injection.Well Jet is in good hands, he might have not of made it if he was still with the person that sold him to you.I'd be calling him up.Well keep up informed, good luck.

Quick Q bro, what are the benefits of Fortaz as opposed to Amikacin? I'm assuming its safer for IM injection and causes less tissue damage, but has to be injected more often? On of my big ones seems to have a slight case RI, he seems to be clearing up fine so far, but I was contemplating calling in a few rounds of Amikacin just in case.

Thanks,

J

Hey,
You said it, it's safer, as it is not considered an aminoglycoside, and does not possess any of the possible side effects of the aforementioned Amikacin, and Baytril. The number of shots given is a little more, however, the broad spectrum properties work just as well, and reduce any ill effects from it.

The use of amikacin will not cause the tissue damage around the injection site that is seen with Baytril. However, ceftazidime (Fortaz) is a much better first choice for it is not only safer, it also has a wider spectrum of bactericidal activity than amikacin. In fact, ceftazidime is one of the best of all the cephalosporin antibiotics. There are only a very few species of bacteria that would require the use of amikacin over ceftazidime.

Good info to know in general. I'm thinking I wont need any medicine as he seems to be perfectly normal today, but I will keep checking. Hopefully I wont ever need to use it, but it just seems too common place to never occur. So thanks guys!!

Thanks for the info, you never know when something like this will happen you one of your own, which I've already dealt with the RI and using Baytril.Best of luck with Jet, he's in good hands and I'm sure will come through. Later, Ethan

Sorry to hear about Jet. I am just glad to know that Jet came to someone like you that knew what to do, and did it! Been there, done that, and it's always nice to see someone care as much as you do for your animals. Glad you shared all the info, and hope you and Jet a bright future! jody
