Okay diet?

Tarentola Dec 29, 2004 08:48 AM

I have a CBB Indoneisan Blue Tongue Skink, he lives in a 15- gallon cage, with 2 hides,a waterdish, and a fake plant. I use paper towels as a substrate. He is doing superb and is around 9 inches and growing fast! My question is how often showed I feed him super and mealworms, I feed him fruits and veggies everyday and then usally I feed him 10 supers once a week.

Is that an okay schedule

Insect larvae should be used to add variety but I personally don't reccomend it as the meat portion of the meal. High quality canned catfood is a great staple meat portion and dark leafy greens are a good staple veggie portion, from there I add worms, cooked meat, fruits, and different kinds of veggies for variety. Good Luck!

As babies they should have animal protein every feeding. I persoanlly do not use mealworms because they are high in phosphorous (which binds calcium to form calcium phosphate which they can not utilize) and they have a lot of chitin which is their indigestible exoskeleton. I don't know much about the nutritional composition of superworms, but I would recommend silkworms if you want to feed worms. They are and excellent source of protein and calcium and moisture. Variety is the key for BTS diet and I would introduce snails, slugs, and low fat dog or cat food. As far as supplements, I would use Rep Cal calcium w/D3 every other day and Herptivite vitamin supplement once a week.

I use the apple snails that you can get for aquariums and my guys LOVE them. Hope this helps.
