Leucistics: anyone have photos of new hatchlings?

Thera Dec 29, 2004 09:18 AM

A friend of mine and I purchased 2 pairs of Sandfire Het Leucistics from Dragon's Den over a year ago and are now producing offspring. Kevin has assured us of the genetics of our parents, but we're not seeing the "born white" babies he's spoken of. I've even raised one clutch to 4 weeks and already sold them off, all looked the same. We're wondering if anyone out there has any photos of hatchling leucistics, especially from Sandfire lines.

Thanks a bunch.
Heather

My hets are not sandfire crosses, but I have produced marketed leucistics from a het to het breeding. There are pictures on my website.

Look under "Future projects." Although marketed leucistic hatchlings are not born pure white, there is a definite difference between them and their non-leucistic siblings. These pictures were taken several weeks ago and the hatchlings continue to lighten as they age.

How old are the babies in the photos?
What Leucistic cross are their parents if not Sandfire (so I can get an idea for comparison)

At the time of the photo they were just a couple of weeks old. They are now approximately seven weeks old and I have a brand new clutch that is three days old as well. No recent pics just yet. As for the cross, I'm not sure. My het male came directly from Dragons Den and I believe Kevin told me he was a normal/leucistic cross. My females came from Dr. Esposito in El Paso, and I think they are a cross with a yellow/leucistic or something similar. Does that help?

This was my cutie at 4 weeks. I had a pic of him compared with a normal at a day old but can't seem to upload it here so if you are interested in that pic email me at smcwilliams@cfl.rr.com . They are supposed to be pretty white at birth but they don't lose all their pattern until a couple months old. I totally agree that leucistics need to be outcrossed for making a stronger line, but it does seem to take it's toll on their over all appearance as far as the snow white color they show. But that's just my two cents.

Just curious if they were 100% het. leucistic verses say a 66% het leucistic? I know Kevin started breeding colors with his leucistics so they looked better. Actually, I can't imagine him producing 66% hets. with the available stock he has. Anyway, just wondering.
Take care,
Karen

Uhm....if you contact Kevin today he might only have 1 or 2 male hets that are 66%. My understanding is most of his leucistic dragons come from het pairs.
