Terry and others,I think we need to start thinking about setting some ground rules on

shannon brown Dec 29, 2004 11:43 AM

the way we name things?
We have done pretty good so far and I am happy about that I just don't want to see this section (hondurans)go like others have were you are scratching your head going what?were is that snake a ghost?or a luecistic etc.

anyways,I think we need to figure out if we are calling the extreme hypo a extreme hypo because of a look?or because of a bloodline?

It does matter because there will be so many fake extreme's being sold in the next couple years (Don Shores and myself already got took on a couple)that we should set up some guide lines?

If you look at the boa constrictors they have kept it real clear and simple. There are two lines of albinos(kahl and sharp)and two lines of hypo (generic and salmon).
So when you see a dbl-het hybino boa they will always say its kahl and salmon or whatever and it really helps cause the outcome is differant ofcouarse.
Same is true with the three types of anerys on the corns. You get snows vs.blizzards depending on the anery used etc.........

Anyways,I think if we are to use the extreme(and we have already started)in dbl morphs we need to establish some kind of system to determine if its a extreme or not?Well at this point its only a extreme if its from a extreme bloodline or is just obviously one at birth?

What do you guys think?

Shannon

Good points you've made here Shannon!

Nomoclenture in our hobby is tremendously abused and highly neglected. You've brought the Boa genetics forward as an example! With boa's, co-dominancy and simple recessive genes are throwing the identification out of whack. As an example, Salmon's are co-dominant. In the Sunglow project (Albino Salmon)the regular Salmon are all 100% Het-Albino, the great boa minds have decide these would be labelled Double-Het Sunglow, the proper terminology would/should of been Salmon Het-Albino...

To get back to hondurans, the breeders need to stick with the proper terminology, a Snow project regular Albino should be called an Albino Het-Anery and not an Albino Het-Snow, same goes for Ghost and Hybino project hondurans. Poor marketing strategies and misrepresentation at best when using such...

As for the Extreme Hypos, I can see where you are coming from with these, lots of dogs out there that will jump all over these, Would a picture ID from the breeder/producer be a feasable idea to insure proper representation once these Extreme start breeding into the other projects. Of couse these pictrure ID's would only be good if represented and backed up by a solid reputation such as yours? Just an idea I'm throwing out there!

I guess we will first need to iron out the genetic riddle with the Extreme Hypos and then work from there?

Anxiously waiting for further comments

All the best to everyone for 2005

I am glad you brought this up Shannon. For example I see Ball Python keepers all worked up with the question of the year being "is this a yellow belley?". This visible marker for definite het Ivory is great for people who really know they're Ball Pythons but of course it gives people an opportunity to trick less experienced keepers into spending outrageous sums of money on something that is a "maybe" at best. With the Hypo Honduran price coming down you can bet many people will convince themselves they have Supers or Extremes and then attempt to market their offspring that way. If you can please answer these questions, at first it seemed the Falcon Extreme Hypo was the label given to these snakes. After the Super vs Extreme debates, his name was removed and just Extreme remained. So is it known that there's an EXACT number of these snakes from the last year [or 2]and they're all from the same bloodline??? Will any snakes which are very similar still be called Extremes even though they may be from a different bloodline? Personally for now I would only buy one from a few people I know and trust. This early in the game it should be possible to keep track of how many there are and who is working with them. I hope that this kind of info will be carefully monitored because of hopes for new versions of Ghosts and Hybinos, and the extra price that will come along with them. I hope and feel this is an important snake in the Hondo scene. I am worried that Hondos with a little extreme influence will become high dollar snakes as hatchlings that turn into average looking adults. This brings up another question already mentioned in previous posts. How do you price extremes.....meaning when more of these are produced, it is likely some will be much more extreme than others. So will it be like Tangerine Albinos? As in anywhere from $500 to $1000 per snake? That's a big difference between OK looking and best of the best. It is probably easier to see in the Tangerines so how will we price these Extremes? Looking forward to hearing peoples comments Tom Stevens

I'm really glad Shannon brought this up. The snake I purchased looked exactly like an extreme hypo until I picked it up. It looked to me just a little lighter than a normal hypo honduran. I asked him about it being an extreme and he told me he never said it was a Falcon extreme. My wife told me just to leave it alone so I didn't say anything else about it. When we got home I showed her the picture on his website and then the snake and she couldn't believe it was the same snake. The female was a nice vanishing hypo tri-color so I just left it alone. I think we will all learn about how pictures on the internet sometimes do not show the actual colors of the animal. Don

Shannon, I am guessing many people are not at the computers during this holiday week? If this post does not get more replies I think we should repost it next week? This is a very valid subject, it would be great to get people thinking about this asap. Thanks Tom Stevens
