new darts

agcarf Dec 29, 2004 12:50 PM

I just got two new tinc froglets, one a bit larger than the other. I put them in a 10 gallon tank and the larger one seems to be doing fine and is hopping around and eating. However, the smaller one just seems to be sitting around. How long should I wait till this is a problem and what should I do?

Thanks

Whenever I get a new frog or a group of froglets, I put each in a separate nursery tank for perhaps a month or 6 weeks to make sure each is eating well before I put them together in a permanent tank. In your case, I would separate the smaller frog and put him in a 5 gallon tank with either the paper towel and some plant cuttings, or what I've found works well for nursery tanks is some packed down wet cocoanut fiber or bed-a-beast. Only 2 inches will do. Plant a few pothos or other plant cuttings and give your frog a deli-cup on its side, flushed with fresh water periodically, and a leaf or two in this, replaced as needed. You don't need to worry about drainage layers in this temporary set-up. It is rinsed down every day with misting. When you move your frog back to your peramanent tank, you just clean out the nursery tank and sanitize it for the next time you need to pack in fresh cocoanut fiber. Every new batch of froglets or even adults I purchase, are always quarantined separately for a period of four to six weeks. This is to be sure that each is healthy., eating well, and if there is a question of a parasite problem, one can be certain of where the fecal sample came from.
