I just saw the original post from Feenie and realize you figured out she has Lunas brother. Stitch is a much better behaved gentleman now than when you saw him last. I would never have found a home for that horror! He has learned to better tolerate handling. His old personality is the reason I decided not to sell him in the first place but when he calmed down I decided to go ahead. His sister Ohana is still just a terror but I will be keeping her anyway. It's funny how many little personalities I had in that clutch. I miss Stitch a lot but I know he has a great mommy.

Speaking of my perfect little gentlemen.... He and Chloe are here with me at work. I seriously can not imagine Stitch being a terror. He is so Perfect! He has never hissed at me or shown any sign of anger when I hold him, and will step on my hand if I put it in front of him. We have had many late night conversations and he seems very at ease with me. Now Chloe on the other hand is a handfull. She tolerates handling but only if you are feeding her or giving her water, the rest of the time she prefers hanging upside down in her cage (?? as long as she's happy) Stitch is adjusting to his new home just nicely. I forgot he was on Florida time when I first got him and was nervous when he would go to bed around 6pm. Then it dawned on me. Duh. I'm taking him in to get weighed and a basic check up on him to start some health records. Chloe is due in about 2 weeks??, so she's going in for xrays. I'm hoping Stitch will be a daddy by next christmas, but only if mother nature prevails. I can hardly wait for the summer!!!

If so he should be a daddy long before Christmas next year.
He went to sleep at 6pm because he was a few hours ahead of you. LOL
Plus he stayed in an outdoor cage most of last year. He only came in about a month before you bought him. He used to watch the sun set from his "sleepy" branch.
He did get much better about handling as he got a bit older. As a youngster he was such a terror! That is how he got his name from Lilo and Stitch.
What is he eating these days? His favorite was always Superworms but he also liked Silkworms. He was never a big fan of crickets.

Hi there,
He did not sire the eggs, she was gravid already and that is why I think she was none responsive with him when he first came over. So with my calculations she should be ready again in march or april, but who knows!
Ya I noticed He didn't like crickets. So he mainly eats superworms out of a bowl. It's so cute he goes right up to the bowl and does not have to use his tounge too much. He will eat crickets if I hold them for him and an occational horn worm. I try to keep it changing, I heard that king worms were hard on the digestive system. Have you heard that? I've had to really up the humidity levels in their room, it's so cold and I've had to use the heater so it's drying everything out. But he is doing well, and is very loved!! It's funny when I let him out of his cage he climbs on top and I can see Chloe peeking over the wall at him. And when she is out of her cage she'll try to reach the wall and all you can see are her bug eyes looking over! I think she thinks he's "hot"! So when the time is right We'll be grandma's!!!

He's my little stud muffin. Good luck and let me know when he sires some eggs.
He was always very fond of Superworms even though they are kind of hard on the digestion. He liked Silkworms too. The bigger the better. Sometimes he would not bother with smaller ones.

LOL!! Of course!! We just got back from the vet and everyone is fine. Stitch was the main attraction. Two people took pics. of him with their camera phones. I think he enjoyed the attention. Chloe is not due for 3 more weeks I hate waiting!! Well I'm glad you are feeling well and back to join us. I'm glad to hear Stitch was never fond of crickets. I was thinking I spoiled him too much! I'll be in touch here I check the messages daily. This is such a cool site, I just wish I would have found it sooner!

weird that he doesn't like crickets. They are Luna's favorite - well, when she is eating! Right now she is digging so I am hoping she will eat tomorrow!

I love this little family thing going on! Juanita, where do you live? When I first got Luna I had her in a small(er) screen cage and when I put the lights out around 8:00 or so she would climb to the top of the cage and walk around in circles (upside down) until I put the lights back on - then she would stop and go down to a branch! I emailed Sonia and she laughed because she would let her stay up until 11:00 (we are both EST)! Over time I adjusted her bedtime until it was in sync with the rest of the world! lol! Btw, this is in part how she got her name - I raise luna moths and when she did this when the lights went out I thought: she circles like a moth to a light, except in reverse - when it gets dark! B/t her behavior and her luna moth green color she was named in just a few days!

I'll dig up the pix of Stitch that I have trying to bite Sonia! (Don't worry, S, I will hide your face to protect the innocent - lol!)

Ya I thinks it's cool that we all have the Family! I live in Seattle, so I'm 3 hours behind you guys. I was worried about Stitch when I first got him, he would lay down in the leaves around 6pm and I thought "oh my god, why is he so weak?" So of course I stuffed him with meal worms and monitored him all day, until I noticed he was awake at 6am, then it dawned on me! He is adjusting to westcoast time just fine. It's hard to wake him up. I like to wake him and Chloe up in the morning when I feed them to make sure they eat something before I leave for work, and he is usually the last one up. It's amazing the personalities these guys have, Stitch had his picture taken 2 times last night with camera phones by strangers, it was cool though! When he and Chloe have babies I'll be calling aunt Luna for a babysitter! I love her name, I thought it was short for Lunatic, but now I know! How long have you raised these moths?

I have a good friend in Seattle and a brother in Lynwood(?). I have yet to make it out there but now that I am done with school I hope to visit more (even though I hate to fly). When I make it out to the PNW I will have to come visit you and Stitch! It was so cool to meet Sonia last year when I was in FL.

Yes, personalities are quite varied! The more time you spend here the more you will see

I have been rearing wild silk moths for about 6 years. I began with luna's and have now reared 7 different species. It is very cool. I used to purchase my eggs from a guy in Canada but I do some wild pairing and collect a couple dozen from the female and then release her. it's quite a committment especially in the summer when all those hungry mouths and munching. Just imagine a clutch of baby veiled's eating pinhead cricket all day every day for 6-12 weeks - non-stop!! But it is a labor of love. I have a few pix of them on my webshots site. Plan to add many more. I think I only have luna moths, io caterpillars and a couple of drawings I did.

Cool. Lynnwood is about 20 miles from me. I have to go there on monday to take my dog to the dermatologist! You are more then welcome to come over! I lived in Colorado most my life and moved out here about 8 years ago. I like it here, but it does rain alot!
I never would have thought to raise moths, it sounds hard. I have my hands full with my dogs and my chams. But I don't have any kids and I don't think I ever will, so my pets are my babies!! I was telling Sonia, how cool this web site is, I've looked it over time and time again, but I'm glad I found it!!

Same here - no kids, just critters! yeah, the moths are time consuming but they are lovely. The cecropia have a wingspan of 6+"

here are a couple pix of luna moths. the first is a male adult (hand reared) The second one is hand reared female (in cage) with wild (called in) male. They stay coupled for 18 hours and in this pic it looks like they are holding hands

Wow, they are beautiful! How did you get started doing that? Does Luna ever try to hunt them? I would be worried about that!! Chloe likes to hunt stuff!! I would love to have them and photograph them. I bet you would get some cool pics!!

Thanks

No! She has absolutley no access to these and I would never feed her a caterpillar or adult of a wild silk. It's weird where/how I draw the line. I only began feeding her silkworms last year for the calcium. I have mixed feelings about breeding them (the silkworms) for her - I just turn my head when she shoots!

The silk moths (family Saturniidae) are sometimes called silkworms (family Bombycidae) and are related to each other. I also won't feed her hornworms b/c it was a tobacco hornworm that got me into rearing leps in the first place! I do however collect small moths at lights to feed her but I make sure they are tent, gypsy or other pesty moth! Like I said...it's a pretty squiggly line I draw! lol!
