deer mice questions

setser Dec 29, 2004 04:49 PM

i have a small colony of these animals and am considering trying to market some. i'd appreciate thoughts on demand.

would any of yall be interested in purchasing-

live to start personal colonies?
frozen pinks?

estimates of quanities you might use annually?

keep in mind that prices would be substantially higher than for domestic mice due the much lower reproductive output. likely around 5-15 times higher for pinks, and 10-20 higher for breeders.

also, anyone interested in mutant strains at a premium, or would demand be as a pure feeder item.

my thanks for your thoughts

If they kick started fussy hatchlings I would purchase frozen. Maybe not in quantities of a hundred but 25-50 or something like that. Is this Kirk ?

yep, its me. been a while since we talked. i lurk around here relatively frequently though.

i'm not sure how well they will kick start those troublesome hatchlings. probably not quite as well as lizards, but i do think they will be better than domestic mice. i'll be testing them this summer, so, if i decide to expand my Peromyscus colony enough to sell more than the occassional spare, i should have a bit of data on how much they help.

People might be interested in them as pets. There is a market for fancy mice.

I don't think there would be much of a market for them. I have a colony of deer mice and they are skittish at best. Sometimes you can touch them without them scurrying for cover but not usually. I just don't think they would be very handleable.

scott,
thanks for the thoughts. i agree with you. Peromyscus are a bit more interesting to watch than Mus, and more attractive (at least to my eye). But they're too skittish to ever be attractive as pets to most. Even my stock, which are from lines bred in captivity for many generations, are much more nervous and quick than domestic mice (though not as bad as freshly trapped Peromyscus).

i like your handle.

I like the deer mice more than the others also. But I raise a very large amount of regular mice and have all colors. I don't know about yours, but mine have fairly small litters (about 4-5). I actually have one that is pretty friendly but the female in the same cage will bite regularly. Thanks on the "handle".
