Crocodile skink hatchling

tkblue247 Dec 29, 2004 05:09 PM

Ive had a pair of croc skinks now for 6 months and theyve successfully produced a hatchling. yay!...Now what do i do? I didnt expect them to hatch one out so soon and now im trying to find out how to care for it. I was told to wait until his first shed to feed him but its been 2 weeks now and hes looking thin. should i go ahead and feed him? also im not quite sure what to do with baby crocs in the long run. i dont want to put the babies back in with the adults if they continue to lay more eggs because i dont want them inbreeding but i also dont want to throw the eggs out because from what i understand its not a commonly captive bred animal. i have asked around and no one seems interested in selling them in local pet stores around here. it seems im at a dead end but is there anyone out there with some ideas?

Yes, feed the hatchling. Just put food(small and slow moving prey is preferable) in its' enclosure and see what happens. Also, if it has not shed, your humidity may be too low. I think you are suppose to wait for the first shed because that is about when the yolk sac is empty, but I don't know. What is you setup for the hatchling like(temp, humidity, water dish, etc.)? Have you seen any more eggs? You usually see an egg after the previous one has hatched. I am not really sure if it is okay to keep hatchlings with adults. I think hatchlings are suppose to be kept at a somewhat higher temperature, so the upper range for the species(so about 90), and humidity normal. I suppose you could keep the hatchlings until they are ready to sell and post them on kingsnake or another website. I think it would be cool to keep a large group of tribs, but I am not sure how that would work. You could possibly trade with someone in the same situation to prevent inbreeding. The best care sheet I have ever found on them(in regards to breeding/care for young) is in german, so unless you understand german too, it won't do you much good. I honestly don't know that much about this species, so I suggest you wait for others to reply before doing too much. Ummm... it is late and I can't think anymore. Hope this helps, jrbl
