New Substrate idea... is if flawed??

photojoe Dec 29, 2004 07:27 PM

I was thinking about something easy enough to spot clean... occasionally disenfect if need be by soaking in bleach solution... looked good... stayed in place... safe... non messy... etc, and I was thinking that 6x6 slate floor tiles might be a good idea (from home depot etc). I think they have some that are non slip kind of rough, so they could move well enough on them, and most cages are made in 6" intervals.

What do you think. Anything wrong with this idea?

Thanks

Well, i would say its probably pretty ok, the only thing that i can think that MIGHT be a bit hard to deal with is that slate gets really very hot. My baby beardies (when iw as breeding) had slate hides that they basked on, and they would get really really hot to the touch. So if you could find a way to keep it from getting so hot that they burned themselves on it, i dont see why not. Slate is not terribly porous, so i would think that you could disinfect it with bleach or nolvosan...

any other opinions??

Let us know what you end up doing...

I will say it does sound pretty good. A few things, as mentioned by the other poster. Slate could get pretty hot, but if the lamp is far enough away to make a good temp for the basking spot and the surface temperature of the slate isnt too bad, it should be fine. The other thing is that the slate may be hard to clean the fecal particles etc off. Also stool could get in the cracks and be hard to clean. I may be thinking of something else though, a photo of what you are talking about would be good. Sounds like a potentially good idea!

Good luck with it, and keep us posted on how it goes if you decide to do it!

I've seen people use regular tiles (like for a kitchen or bathroom) before and have never heard of any problems with it, this would be very similar. Give it a shot and let us know how it works for you.

I use the normal tiles in one of my beardeds cages. I like it for some of my beardeds but not all. I tried it with one of my males and he would run through his poop and get it ALL over the tiles. I would land up cleaning it every other day! i went back to sand for him since it clumps up. Dont have that problem any longer. The one i do have tiles in, seems to do very well on them. A bonus is it keeps her toes nails to a managable legnth too!
