Why are gargoyles so much more than cresteds?

giantsfan24 Dec 29, 2004 08:06 PM

I have kept cresteds(best beginner lizard in my opinion) before but never got into gargs. I am going to get back into cresteds and hopefully(key word) start bredding some but why are the gargs so much more expensive. From what I remember, the only real difference in taking care of them is more fruit. Thanks

gargoyle geckos are not as prolific as crested geckos. therefore they are more expensive because there are less available and less being bred. a good crested gecko will easily match the price of a gargoyle gecko. if you're looking at lower end cresteds and lower end gargoyle geckos then there is maybe a 20 dollar difference.

Not as prolific as stated. And the gargoyles need more protein (more crickets, less fruit) The trex garg diet has more protein that the CGD.

I was at the New England Reptile Expo shopping for my garg, and at first all the ones I found were around $125 and up. Those prices didn't jive with the prices I've seen at Kingsnake and other sites.

Then I found one dealer with a garg priced at $50, and it didn't seem any smaller or lower quality than the others I'd seen. I asked him, point blank, why this one was cheaper than the others. He was surprised at the other prices I mentioned, and what he said was, basically, that the other prices were ripoffs.
Gargs are a bit rarer in the industry and some dealers will use that as an excuse to jack up the price.

Anyways, I bought the $50 garg and I've been very happy with my gecko. I don't think that gargs are much more expensive than cresteds - you just have to look around.

If you look good enough, you will find that you can get a nice gargoyle for the same price as a crested. I got my gargoyle for only $65 at a show, which was only about $10 more than most of the cresteds there. Here is my gargoyle...
