C/B Corn Strike and Constrict instinct

Morphman Dec 29, 2004 09:14 PM

I have purchased a couple of corn morphs recently and I know everyone says frozen thawed but it doesn’t seem natural.I do not leave live food with my snakes unattended. These morphs were raised the first couple of months on F/T now when served live they just swallow them alive not that the pinkys can run away. I was wondering as the mice get larger and start moving will the snakes get the strike and constrict instinct. I have never owned C/B hatchlings only W/C adults and sub adults so I don’t know how hatchlings feed. Again I do not leave live food with any of my snakes unattended any time.

THANKS MORPHMAN

It's very common for corns to eat pinkies without contricting them first. They'll start contricting when the food sizes get bigger, even if it's frozen/thawed or pre-killed.

Once may corns are on fuzzies or bigger I start forcing them to constrict by trying to pull the mice away (gently) after they have latched on. The constricting helps keep good tone and helps avoid females from being egg bound. I don't feed live becuase the problem with adult mice hurting the snake during the fight. Pinkies are not a threat either way, but if they were raised on F/T then there is no real reasen to switch them. F/T is so much cheaper!
Good Luck
