I don't think this thing is working out so well...

Antegy Dec 29, 2004 09:54 PM

Hi again everyone,

I'm having issues with the radiant heat panel I recently installed in my burm's Vision cage. I've had it going for several days now, but it doesn't seem to be doing a very good job of keeping him warm.

The panel itself runs at about 160 degrees (F), but it only gets the floor beneath it up to about 80 degrees. I measured him and he was only about 83 degreees (varied from about 80 to 86). Of course, the ceiling above the panel (top of the cage) is at about 90+ degrees.

I've even gone and installed a layer of insulation on the bottom of the cage (on the outside of course); but this doesn't seem to have helped much at all. It just seems like the heat can't make it all the way to the floor of the cage (which is about 17" away).

So I just had this idea: move the panel from the cieling to the light shroud. I figure, if I mount it on the bottom of the light shroud it will be much, much closer to the floor (and pointedly, closer to him). It's about 10.5" from the bottom of the light shroud to the floor, minus the 1" thickness of the panel, and minus the four inches tall that he is, leaves about 5 or so inches of air space between him and the panel. That should be plenty close enough for that heater to keep him toasty. And since I have it on a thermostat I'd still be able to throttle it down if need be.

Here's how it is now (I'm considering moving it down five or six inches closer to the floor by mounting on the bottom of the light shroud next to it instead...):

Now, is this a dumb idea? It only just occured to me moments ago; so I haven't had a chance to really think it through yet. Of course, I do realize that this would defeat the intended purpose of the light shroud. But perhaps I can address that with simple room lighting?

Please share your ideas on this with me, as it's starting to bother me to the point where I'm getting frustrated.

Thanks very much,
- Mark

P.S.
The average temps in the room run from about 72 to 79 degrees (F), at about 60% RH.

Hey keep me posted. I was really interested in your RHP. I was planning on purchasing several of them and now I am not to sure. My room temps seem to be similar to yours.
