Tegus and Tortoises?

AdamDispenza Dec 29, 2004 10:52 PM

I was wondering if it were possible to house an adult Argentine tegu or a pair of adults with 2 or 3 adult Red-foot Tortoises in a large outdoor habitat. I've known people who have housed Green Iguanas with Tegus without any problems. The only possible conflicts I can imagine is over food like fruit or perhapts if the tortoises nest, the Tegus may dig up the nest and eat the eggs. I'm not going to breed them, so I don't think thats such a worry. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I raise both. IMHO, not a good idea. they have different needs and cages need to be setup differently. Not to mention they can both do damage to each other physically as well as through parasites and bacteria.

i let my tegus, iguanas, sulcattas, and box turtles roam in my reptile room together for part of the day. they seem to do okay. i have heard though that you need to worry about diseases, but i haven't had any propblems. it's a pretty large room. i kind of figure the risk of a disease is off set by the benefit they get from not having to be cooped up in their cages all the time. i figure if some people get away with letting their reptiles comingle not only with their with other reptiles but their dogs and cats and children that maybe i'll be okay.
